SIMPLE PAST VS. PRESENT PERFECT

SIMPLE PAST:

(did, went, studied, etc.) We use it for: Finished actions in the past (with a specific time reference). Actions that are not connected to the present. Signal words: yesterday, last week, in 2010, two days ago, when I was a child, then.

eXAMPLES

Look!!!

I visited London last summer. (specific time = finished action)She studied French in high school. (finished period) They watched a movie yesterday. (specific time = finished action)

PRESENT PERFECT:

(have/has + past participle) We use it for: Experiences at an indefinite time (we don’t say when). Actions that started in the past and continue now. Actions with a result in the present. Signal words: ever, never, already, yet, just, so far, recently, since, for.

eXAMPLES

Look!!!

I have visited London. (no time given → experience) She has studied English for 5 years. (still studying now) They have already watched that movie. (result = they don’t need to watch it again now)
