Introduction
Miyan Tansen was born around 1506 in a small village near Gwalior, India. His original name was Ramtanu Pandey. From a young age, he showed an extraordinary talent for music. It is said that he could imitate the sounds of birds and animals with his voice. Seeing his gift, his parents sent him to learn music under the great saint and musician Swami Haridas, who trained him in classical ragas and devotional songs. Under Haridas’s guidance, Tansen’s musical skills grew quickly, and he became known for his deep knowledge and soulful singing. Later, Tansen served in the court of Raja Ramchandra of Rewa, where his fame spread far and wide. His powerful voice and skill in creating new ragas impressed everyone who heard him. When Emperor Akbar learned about his talent, he invited Tansen to join his royal court as one of the “Navaratnas” or nine jewels. At Akbar’s court, Tansen converted to Islam and was given the title “Miyan,” which means “master.” He composed many beautiful ragas and is often called the father of Indian classical music. His journey from a small village boy to the greatest musician of his time made him a true legend in Indian history.

Raag Deepak is one of the most famous ragas created and sung by Miyan Tansen. It is said to be a very powerful raga that produces the effect of heat and fire when sung correctly. According to legends, when Tansen performed Raag Deepak in Emperor Akbar’s court, the lamps around him lit up by themselves, and the temperature rose so much that he became ill from the heat. To cure him, his disciples sang Raag Megh, a raga that brings rain. Though the story may be part legend, it shows Tansen’s unmatched mastery and deep understanding of music’s power.
