Samuel Morse
Samuel Morse was an accomplished inventor best known for his electric telegraph and his part in developing morse code. The telegraph made communication much faster, allowing messages to be sent across far distance almost instantly. Before this creation, people had to communicate by sending letters to be delivered through horse or ship, which could take weeks.
The morse code is also significant because it is a way to communicate which maintaining radio silence. In fact, it is still used widely today, whether its in the radio, or for spies to use to send secret messages. Today he will be in charge of the playground, taking care of the kids, where they can experience his invention.
Lowell Factory System Show
If you ever need a place to sit down and relax at our carnival, consider heading over to our show tent. Today’s documentary is showcasing the Lowell Factory System, an early industrial model developed in Lowell, Massachusetts during the early 1800s. Even though the show will go more in depth, here is a little snippet of what you might learn. The Lowell Factory System was designed to make the production of textiles faster and more efficient by bringing all the steps of manufacturing (spinning cloth and sewing) into one factory, instead of having them done separately by hand. Come here to rewind and dive deep into the history of it all, before you get back to your thrilling activities.
Ferris Wheel
Take a whirl on our Ferris wheel inspired by the Spinning Jenny, the invention that revolutionized the textile industry in the 18th century. It was a multi-spindle spinning frame invented by James Hargreaves in 1764 that allowed workers to spin multiple threads at once, significantly increasing yarn production. While we aren’t exactly spinning threads in our Ferris Wheel, the same motion of going in a circle is exhibited, showing how the thread would move. Buckle up, hold tight, and experience the spin that changed yarn production!
Kids can also experience how people used to telegraph back in the day. This was a revolutionary invention that allowed people to send messages instantly over long distances using electrical signals, whereas before, they had to use horse or ship to deliver messages, which took weeks in some cases. Here kids can speak into the opening at one end of the playground and if a child at the other end puts his ear in the other end, then he can hear the messages being sent!
New Horizon Playground
Want to go the the shooting range, but don’t know where to leave your kids? Check out the New Horizon Playground featuring the clipper ship seesaw and the telegraph experience. The clipper ship was a type for fast sailing ship that was known for its sleek, narrow hulls and tall masts with large sails. This made them much faster than earlier cargo ships, allowing them to carry goods quickly over long distances. Today your kids will feel the speed as they step into this simple, but fun seesaw.
Lego Land
Step into the world of invention and innovation at our Lego Land, inspired by Eli Whitney’s revolutionary concept of interchangeable parts. In the early 1800s, he transformed manufacturing by proving that identical parts could be made to fit any product of the same model, paving the way for mass production and modern assembly lines. At Lego Land, you’ll see this idea in action as you build, rebuild, and swap pieces to create something new. Test your creativity one brick at a time.
Agricultural Area
The mechanical reaper used blades powered by horses to cut and gather grain automatically, allowing one farmer to do the work of several people in a fraction of the time. These tools revolutionized agriculture, turning small family farms into houses and that can help feed a growing nation. These inventions belong here because the South specialized in agriculture and these innovations took it to the next level. Try your hand at “farming” the old way and the new and feel the difference that innovation made!
Step into our fields and experience how the Market Revolution transformed American farming! Before the 1830s, farmers used wooden plows and harvested grain by hand; difficult, slow work that limited how much food they could grow. Then came John Deere’s steel plow and Cyrus McCormick’s mechanical reaper; inventions that made it possible to cut through heavy soil and harvest crops faster than ever before. The plow was made of polished steel and had a specially shaped blade that cut smoothly through tough soil without clogging.
Steam Boat Swing
Climb aboard and ride the waves of innovation on our Steamboat Swing! Inspired by Robert Fulton’s steamboat, which first powered up American rivers in the early 1800s, this ride rocks back and forth just like the mighty vessels that transformed travel and trade. Steamboats used powerful steam engines to move upstream against the current, connecting cities, carrying goods, and shrinking distances across the nation. Steamboats were crucial to the South from 1800-1840 because they enabled faster and more efficient transportation of cash crops like cotton and sugar to market, which fueled the growth of the Cotton Kingdom.
Cotton Candy Machine
Inspired by Eli Whitney’s cotton gin from 1793, this sugary spinner shows how one simple idea can change everything. Whitney’s cotton gin quickly separated cotton fibers from seeds, making cotton production faster and more efficient, turning it into one of America’s biggest industries. Just like the gin transformed raw cotton into clean fiber, our machine spins plain sugar into fluffy, colorful cotton candy! Taste the sweetness of innovation and see how the Market Revolution kept America spinning forward!
Eli Whitney
Eli Whitney was an American inventor, best known for inventing the cotton gin, a machine that separated seeds from cotton fiber, and for pioneering the use of interchangeable parts in manufacturing. His cotton gin significantly increased the profitability of cotton farming, which unfortunately expanded the institution of slavery in the American South. Today, he will be running the Cotton Candy machine!
Cumberland Rollercoaster
Get ready for a thrilling ride on the Cumberland Rollercoaster! It is a wild adventure inspired by the Cumberland Road, America’s first major highway. Just like how the Cumberland Road helped pioneers and travelers move westward, connecting distance towns, this rollercoaster takes you on an exciting journey full of twists and turns. The Cumberland Road was in the West to facilitate westward expansion, promote commerce, and enhance national unity. The rollercoaster cars and designed like actual cars on the outside so it feels like you are actually riding down Cumberland Road, but with more of a thrill. Feel the rush in our newest ride!
Colt Shooting Range
Test your aim at our shooting range! It’s an action-packed tribute to the Colt revolver, one of the most influential inventions of the Market Revolution. In the mid-1800s, Samuel Colt’s revolver revolutionized personal defense and military power with a weapon that could fire multiple rounds without having to reload. Step up, steady your hand, and see if you’ve got the eye of a 19th-century sharpshooter. **Only for 16+. Sorry kids!
Samuel Colt
Samuel Colt was an American inventor, industrialist, and businessman who revolutionized the military with his invention of the Colt revolver. This was the first mass produced revolver and made the United States military much stronger. His revolving-cylinder pistols became famous for their ability to fire multiple shots with reloading, earning the name “the great equalizer.” Today he will be running the shooting range at New Horizons to make sure that nobody gets hurt with his invention.
Nurse's Office
Your kid fell and scraped his knee? Come to the nurse’s office in the middle of the park! While we won’t be directly using ether anestasia on our patients, you can also come here to learn about how it was used in the 1800s and how it came to be. In places such as this nurse’s office, surgery was extremely painful and dangerous as well because patients were awake and could go into shock. In 1846, ether anesthesia was invented to make patients unconscious and free from pain during surgery. This revolutionized the medical industry, and is in fact still used in hospitals today.
New Horizon Express
All aboard the New Horizon Express! Hop on our railroad for a fun-filled ride. Not only does it take you a fun journey around the park, it also has historical significance.
