History and trends

While commonly grouped together, evaluation and research offer two different assesments for a counselor. Evaluations involve gathering subjective information for decision making for the practice, program, or services. They insure that counseling practices/programs are effectively performing as they are intended to. Research is based off observation and theory. The findings lead to results that can be used to make educated decisions in your career. The goal of research is to answer questions and identify problems.

INTRODUCTION

Counseling is not a static career. Counselors need to use research and evaluations for continuous improvement and best client care.

Evaluations allow counselors to examine their own practice and improve their services or methods. 1. Needs assessment 2.Stating goals: terminal & ultimate 3. Designing a program 4. Revising & improving a program 5. Noting & reporting program outcomes

Research proves relations no relations between variables that explain why events occur. 1. Statement of the problem 2. Identification of information needed to solve the problem. 3. Selection or development of measures for gathering data 4. Identification of the target population and sampling procedures 5. Design of the procedure for data collection 6. Collection of data 7. Analysis of data 8. Preparation of a report

The Steps

Evaluation

Identify a problem or concen within the practice

as counselors

Measure progress in a progam, practice, or services

It is a counselor's responsibility to be an evaluator or to be a consumer of evaluations to practice ethically and gain insight on what is lacking within their practice. In order to do this, counselors need to follow the steps of an evaluation program. Counselors in the role of an evaluator or consumer of evaluations need to implement the needs and program goals indentified within the evaluation process.

Identify weaknesses and needs

Explain events and establish goals

Ensure quality client care

Roles, Functions, and Responsibilities

Research

Lack of knowledge and/or awareness

as counselors

Fear of negative results or lack of financial support

It is a counselor's responsibility to be a researcher or use research findings within their practice. The investigation of finding the answers to questions are important for not only your personal gain as a counselor but to help other counselors as well. There are different reasons for why a counselor either feels pulled towards or pulled away from research

Types of Evaluation Methods

PPBS Model: Goal-oriented model that focuses on the target audience and situation if the progress is carried out, this model demonstrates that effective counseling is a important factor for a client's growth Budgeting decisions to make counseling cost-effective Documents the program's strenghts and weaknesses to put counseling administrators in a better position to justify requests (funding, new services, etc.)

P + P = R Evaluation: Constructed for school counselors but can be used in other enviornments Personnel evaluation: the way that school counselors are supervised and evaluated Program evaluation: compares the program to another established program to assess standards Results evaluation: focuses on the affect that the actvities in the program has on students

CIPP Model: has 4 types of evaluations within the model Context evaluation: a comparison of what the program is supposed to do and what the program actually accomplishes Input evaluation: demonstrate cost-effectiveness by considering what resources are needed and what resources are available to meet the program's goals Process evaluation: focuses on the strengths and weaknesses of the program to correct the weaknesses Product evaluation: Focuses on the results of the counseling program to make the decision to continue, tweak, or eliminate the program

Here is an Example!

What model is being used here?

There was a poll taken at a school asking students to evaluate their school counselors. In this evaluation, students are answering how helpful they find their school counselors and if they feel like their counselors are helpful to their acedemic success. The results from the poll are compaired to the results at another school's poll. Lastly, the school comes up with new tactics for students to find their school counselors more approachable and revisit the poll 3 months later.

Types of Research Methods

Basic vs Applied Research: The difference between basic and applied research is that basic is when the researcher has an interest in investigating a problem. Applied research is when the researcher finds an existing problemand conducts research to find a solution.

Laboratory vs field Research: This is the difference between conducting an investigation in an artificial, confinded environment or conducting an observation in an actual counseling situation. Both are effective and depend on the situation and personal preference.

Process vs outcome Research: Process research focuses on the therapy process; what happens in therapy sessions Outcome research focuses on the impact that counseling makes on clients by measuring variables before and after treatment.

Quantitative vs qualitative Research: Quantitative research is based on numeric values to clarify or reproduce an event. Qualitative research is more naturalistic and is based more on finding the placement of people in their environments.

History

and trends

In counseling, historical research has been neglected. This is due to the reporting of events and procedures from the earlier times and embellishing current theories. One major event for the history of research in counseling is when theories emerged in the late 1800s. This created foundational frameworks for psychologists to build off each other and evaluate each others works. Without the evaluation and research of theories, we would not have multiple theories that are influenced by others because other psychologist wouldn't have questioned established theories or furthered researched them. Evaluation and research within counseling broadened the horizons for profession development for counselors

Statistics became prominent in psychological research in the early 1900s. They help researchers evaluate research and find significant quantitative data.

Collaboration

evaluation & Research

Evaluation and research are important for yourself as a clinician as well as other clinicians. Both are shared with other couselors whether you are the one producing the results or consuming them. Collaboration between counselors for evaluations and research increases consistancy and positive theraputic outcomes. Another example of collaboration for evaluation is between the client and counselor when the evaluation is seeking feedback on the preformance of the counselor. Collaboration is a key factor for both research and evaluation so that actions and ideas can be assessed and built off of.

Technology

Technology can be used to conduct both evaluations and research. It can make both more accessible and more accurate.

Evaluations can be conducted many different ways including online. For evaluations of a program, it is common to receive an email containing a website or QR code to complete a survey. Another common occurance of technology in evaluations is using a recording device within session for supervision purposes. (with consent from client)

Statistics are a major part of research. In order to calculate stats, perform data analysis, and create visuals, the researcher will need statistical software tools. -SPSS -R Programming -STATA -NVivo -JAMOVI
