Flossing After Coronal Polishing
- Use floss to polish interproximal areas
- Work floss back and forth through contacts
- Use floss threader under bridges if needed
How to Properly Floss
Step 1:
Wind about 18 inches of floss around your middle fingers. Leave 1–2 inches between your thumbs and index fingers for control. Step 2:
Use your thumbs to guide the floss between upper teeth and your index fingers for lower teeth. Keep the floss tight between your fingers. Step 3:
Gently guide the floss between teeth using a zigzag motion. 👉 Do not snap the floss into the gums.
Curve the floss around each tooth in a “C” shape. Step 4:
Slide the floss up and down against the tooth surface and under the gumline.
Use a clean section of floss for each tooth.
Evaluation of Polishing
After coronal polishing, the teeth should be carefully evaluated to ensure quality and patient comfort.✅ Checklist for a Successful Polish:
- No disclosing agent or debris remains on the teeth
- Teeth appear smooth, glossy, and stain-free
- No trauma or irritation to the gingiva or soft tissues
- Patient reports comfort during and after the procedure
Patient Education
During and after coronal polishing, the dental assistant should help patients understand how to maintain a healthy, stain-free smile.
- Explain the causes of stains (e.g., coffee, tea, tobacco, poor hygiene)
- Encourage consistent oral hygiene habits like brushing and flossing
- Review home care tips to help maintain polishing results
- Discuss cosmetic options for intrinsic or resistant stains
Legal and Ethical Implications
- Laws regarding coronal polishing by dental assistants vary by state
- Some states require certification or registration before performing this procedure
- It is the assistant’s responsibility to know and follow state regulations
- A coronal polish is not the same as a prophylaxis (cleaning)
- Only a licensed dentist or dental hygienist can perform a prophylaxis
