Patient & Operator Positioning
Patient Preparation Steps
- Review medical history for contraindications
- Seat and drape patient with waterproof napkin
- Remove any dental appliances
- Provide protective eyewear
- Explain procedure and answer questions
- Inspect oral cavity for lesions or missing teeth
- Apply disclosing agent if needed
Positioning the Patient and Operator
Proper positioning of both the operator and the patient during coronal polishing procedures is necessary for maximum comfort and efficency
Positioning the Patient
Maxillary → Chin up
Mandibular → Chin down
Headrest Positioning
Use a double-articulated headrest to properly support the patient’s head and neck. Adjust the headrest to align the patient’s dental arch parallel to the floor for mandibular procedures and slightly tilted back for maxillary procedures.
For access to the maxillary arch, position the patients head with the chin up.
For the mandibular arch, the patients head is positioned so the lower jaw is parallel to the floor when the mouth is open.
Positioning the Operator
- Keep feet flat and thighs parallel to the floor
- Arms at waist level, even with patient’s mouth
Positioning the Operator
- Right-handed: sit at 8–9 o’clock position
- Left-handed: sit at 3–4 o’clock position
Polishing Technique
Coronal Polishing Steps
- Use light pressure — let the cup hug the tooth
- Polish each surface for 1–2 seconds
- Each tooth should take about 3–5 seconds total
- Avoid high speed — friction can cause heat and pulp damage
Polishing technique
- Follow a set sequence so no area is missed
- Adjust based on patient needs and operator preference
Example sequence:1–16 facial, 16–1 lingual, 32–17 facial, 17–32 lingual
