The Present Perfect

Subject + have/has + past participle

The Present Perfect connects the past to the present. It’s used when the exact time is not mentioned, but the effect or result is still relevant now.

When do we use it?

Keywords

  • To talk about life experiences (without saying when): I have visited Rome.
  • To describe actions that started in the past and continue until now: I have lived here since 2010.
  • To talk about recent actions with present results: He has broken his leg. (So he can't walk.)
  • To talk about recent past : I have just had coffee
NB: ❌ Don't use Present Perfect with specific past time expressions:
  • for/since (=depuis)
  • just, recently (=récemment)
  • ever, never (=jamais)
  • not … yet (= pas encore)
  • already (=déjà)

Difference !

Written Expression

Write about 3 things you have never done and 2 things you have done recently
