Utah Beach

Monsieur Piat stands on the beach, his eyes disappearing into his face. Jacques and Mart are playing football. Claudine and Nicole are racing. He takes me to the back of the beach, where the dry grass waves in the wind. Monsieur Piat points to some words written on a metal plate.

The sign explains that, on this beach, thousands of men jumped out of boats and ran towards a gun that was placed right where we are standing. Hundreds of men died. Monsieur Piat has a dent in his leg. His eyes disappear into his face.
