ResearchComp is a tool designed to help researchers assess and develop their transversal skills, assist higher education institutions and training providers in adapting their offerings to researchers, and enable employers to recognize the wide set of competences of researchers.
It establishes a common language and understanding of researchers’ transversal competences and can be used by various stakeholders such as researchers, universities, research organizations, training providers, employers, and policymakers.
It is the first competence framework for researchers at the EU level, developed based on the most recent analysis of the transversal skills that researchers need for successful and interoperable careers in all sectors of society, including academia, industry, business, public administration, NGOs, and others.

This two-hour remote course helps doctoral students increase their productivity by focusing on three key areas: defining what’s desirable via prioritisation (manage priorities), setting realistic goals and expectations (manage expectations) and executing effectively through time, space and action management (make it happen). It emphasizes practical habits such as organising physical and virtual workspaces, minimising interruptions, breaking tasks into manageable parts and saying “no” when needed. By combining mindset shifts with concrete time-management and environment-optimization strategies, the course equips PhD candidates to move from intention to measurable progress.

Genially gagne en popularité au sein des institutions, et ce n'est pas sans raison. Ses fonctionnalités étendent considérablement les possibilités en termes d'interactivité, de communication visuelle et de gamification. Que ce soit pour concevoir un escape game, un quiz, des flashcards, un CV, une infographie ou même un site éducatif, Genially offre une flexibilité remarquable.
Une de ses forces réside dans sa capacité à se détacher de la vision traditionnellement linéaire d'un diaporama, en proposant des schémas de construction de contenus plus proches de la réalité des structures neuronales impliquées dans l'apprentissage.

For PhD holders, securing employment is generally not difficult: they typically have low unemployment rates and a relatively short transition from completing their thesis to starting their first job. The greater challenge often lies in finding positions that fully match their advanced skills and education. Addressing this requires a clear understanding of (1) the competencies employers value and (2) the realities of the labor market beyond academia. This presentation explores these issues by providing an overview of PhD career paths, the challenges doctorate holders face during the transition to employment, and the key skills employers seek. Drawing on two complementary studies conducted by the Observatory of Research and Scientific Careers (ORCS), it offers a dual perspective: the experiences of doctorate holders entering the labor market and the expectations and perceptions of non-academic employers.

You'll assess yourself across 15 competences classified into 3 areas with their individual threads and 8 proficiency levels - progression descriptors. Each page of the tool shows the threads associated to each competence. To assess yourself in entrepreneurship competences, for each thread, select the progression descriptor, corresponding to your current proficiency level.After each area of competences is completed, you will be presented with attractive radar chart, summarizing your current proficiency levels in that area. Aims and content of the training
The aim of this doctoral training is twofold. On the one hand, to provide an introduction to basic epistemological issues – that is, questioning the nature of (scientific) knowledge, its production and justification, as well as the way we form beliefs on a daily basis. We will specifically focus on classical pitfalls and biases linked to statistics and the use of formal and mathematical tools in scientific and daily life contexts. On the other hand, the aim is also to be able to apply these epistemological reflections to provide practical intellectual tools to sharpen our critical thinking skills and dispositions: when faced with information, how should we position and what method should we use to form the most reliable idea, given the information available, so as to make as few mistakes/be manipulated as possible ? In which cases we’d better not to take position and acknowledge the limits of our competence domain ? And so on.

Risk & RACE est un serious game développé par VITO (reconnu par l’EIT RawMaterials – UE), centré sur l’entrepreneuriat en économie circulaire. Il vise à faire réfléchir les participants sur les modèles économiques circulaires et à simuler la prise de décision stratégique dans un environnement contraint. Déroulement du jeux : les participants prennent la direction d’une entreprise manufacturière qu’ils doivent piloter pendant 8 années simulées (8 tours de jeu). Leur objectif est de pérenniser l’entreprise tout en s’adaptant à un contexte externe fluctuant, marqué par des événements inspirés de l’actualité : rupture de chaîne d’approvisionnement, crise bancaire, volatilité des prix, nouvelles réglementations, indisponibilité de certaines ressources, etc. Objectifs : • Se questionner sur les modèles économiques actuels et alternatifs (économie circulaire).
• Comprendre la notion de responsabilité entrepreneuriale, l’impact des choix stratégiques, dans un contexte simulé, sur l’environnement, la société.
• Comprendre la notion de durabilité comme un levier stratégique dans une entreprise.

QGis est un logiciel SIG (système d’information géographique) gratuit, open-source et simple à utiliser. Outil relativement peu exploité par les chercheurs de sciences humaines, il permet pourtant de visualiser, créer, modifier et analyser tout type de données spatiales (inventaires, cartes de répartition, plans anciens, tracés de limites administratives, cartes de chaleur), de les rassembler dans une base de données, et de produire des cartes de grande qualité. Le but de cet atelier sera donc de vous initier à la réalisation de quelques opérations de base : ajouter un fond de carte et des cartes anciennes, géoréférencer un tableau de données Excel, jouer avec les styles d’affichage pour faire apparaître différentes catégories d'informations, intégrer un plan scanné, produire une carte avec une échelle et une légende, etc.

Cette session de sensibilisation vous permet d’acquérir en un temps record une compréhension du champ de l’éthique de la recherche et des enjeux qui en font partie (éthique animale, éthique humaine, RGPD). Souvent confondue avec l’intégrité et la déontologie scientifique (contrôle de l’activité scientifique par et pour les scientifiques), l’éthique de la recherche est née de la réponse sociétale (contrôle de l’activité scientifique par la société) apportée à la suite de scandales historiques mettant en jeu des recherches ou des avancées scientifiques, ainsi que de la prise en compte dans le champs de la recherche d’attentes citoyennes grandissantes (bien-être animal, respect des droits de l’homme,…). Dans ses développements les plus récents, l’éthique de la recherche s’intègre à un ensemble de considérations plus larges qui renvoient à la Recherche responsable, ce qui inclut notamment les usages duaux de la recherche, les partenariats institutionnels à risque, les pratiques de recherche extractives ou encore la préoccupation écologique relatives à des pratiques de recherche durables. Les attentes envers des pratiques de recherche responsables concernent désormais l’ensemble des champs disciplinaires et il est recommandé de s’y former dès le début de la carrière scientifique
Dans un format resserré de 3 heures, mêlant cas pratiques, enjeux historique s et renseignements pratiques, cette session constitue un passage incontournable pour qui veut s’orienter avec plus de clarté dans le champ complexe des enjeux éthiques de la recherche.

Mais vous vous sentez parfois mal à l’aise pour répondre quand on vous pose des questions sur l’utilité sociale de vos recherches, ou sur les retombées – positives ou négatives - de celles-ci, voire sur certains enjeux éthiques qu’elles comporteraient. Si vous reconnaissez l’intérêt potentiel de ces questionnements, vous ne vous sentez pas forcément outillé.e pour y répondre au-delà de ce qui excède la technique et le rationnel scientifique.
La formation « Sensibilisation à l’argumentation éthique » se propose de vous aider à :
- À identifier ce qu’est un argument valable au plan éthique, en quoi il se distingue d’un argument scientifique, juridique ou moral ;
- A repérer les arguments fallacieux ou d’autorité et à y répondre efficacement ;
- A formuler de façon détaillée une réponse à des questions qui dépassent le cadre scientifique pour aborder celui des valeurs, et à débattre de façon collégiale sur des questions sensibles.
En appliquant la philosophie « learning by doing », la formation proposée est entièrement conduite sous la forme d’exercices pratiques d’une difficulté croissante, visant à vous faire acquérir l’aisance souhaitée dans les discussions éthique et sociétale auxquelles vous pourriez être confronté.es. Encadrés par une ethicienne expérimentée, les exercices pratiques sont inspirés de questions éthiques actuelles.

For PhD holders, securing employment is generally not difficult: they typically have low unemployment rates and a relatively short transition from completing their thesis to starting their first job. The greater challenge often lies in finding positions that fully match their advanced skills and education. Addressing this requires a clear understanding of (1) the competencies employers value and (2) the realities of the labor market beyond academia. This presentation explores these issues by providing an overview of PhD career paths, the challenges doctorate holders face during the transition to employment, and the key skills employers seek. Drawing on two complementary studies conducted by the Observatory of Research and Scientific Careers (ORCS), it offers a dual perspective: the experiences of doctorate holders entering the labor market and the expectations and perceptions of non-academic employers.

Aims and content of the training The aim of this doctoral training is twofold. On the one hand, to provide an introduction to basic epistemological issues – that is, questioning the nature of (scientific) knowledge, its production and justification, as well as the way we form beliefs on a daily basis. We will specifically focus on classical pitfalls and biases linked to statistics and the use of formal and mathematical tools in scientific and daily life contexts. On the other hand, the aim is also to be able to apply these epistemological reflections to provide practical intellectual tools to sharpen our critical thinking skills and dispositions: when faced with information, how should we position and what method should we use to form the most reliable idea, given the information available, so as to make as few mistakes/be manipulated as possible ? In which cases we’d better not to take position and acknowledge the limits of our competence domain ? And so on.

Risk & RACE est un serious game développé par VITO (reconnu par l’EIT RawMaterials – UE), centré sur l’entrepreneuriat en économie circulaire. Il vise à faire réfléchir les participants sur les modèles économiques circulaires et à simuler la prise de décision stratégique dans un environnement contraint. Déroulement du jeux : les participants prennent la direction d’une entreprise manufacturière qu’ils doivent piloter pendant 8 années simulées (8 tours de jeu). Leur objectif est de pérenniser l’entreprise tout en s’adaptant à un contexte externe fluctuant, marqué par des événements inspirés de l’actualité : rupture de chaîne d’approvisionnement, crise bancaire, volatilité des prix, nouvelles réglementations, indisponibilité de certaines ressources, etc. Objectifs : • Se questionner sur les modèles économiques actuels et alternatifs (économie circulaire). • Comprendre la notion de responsabilité entrepreneuriale, l’impact des choix stratégiques, dans un contexte simulé, sur l’environnement, la société. • Comprendre la notion de durabilité comme un levier stratégique dans une entreprise.

QGis est un logiciel SIG (système d’information géographique) gratuit, open-source et simple à utiliser. Outil relativement peu exploité par les chercheurs de sciences humaines, il permet pourtant de visualiser, créer, modifier et analyser tout type de données spatiales (inventaires, cartes de répartition, plans anciens, tracés de limites administratives, cartes de chaleur), de les rassembler dans une base de données, et de produire des cartes de grande qualité. Le but de cet atelier sera donc de vous initier à la réalisation de quelques opérations de base : ajouter un fond de carte et des cartes anciennes, géoréférencer un tableau de données Excel, jouer avec les styles d’affichage pour faire apparaître différentes catégories d'informations, intégrer un plan scanné, produire une carte avec une échelle et une légende, etc.

Mind the GAP (Good Academic Research Practices) is an online training tool focusing on the good academic research practices contributing to research integrity, this to help researchers perform high-quality academic research and to prevent mistakes and research misconduct. This interactive training on research integrity is based on the European Code of Conduct on Research Integrity (ALLEA-Code, 2023). The tool has been created by the Flemish Interuniversity Council (VLIR) in cooperation with the research integrity and policy advisors of all 5 Flemish universities (KU Leuven, UAntwerp, UGent, UHasselt and VUB). This e-learning tool consists of four main modules relevant for all researchers, independent of their discipline: Module 1: Introduction: research integrity in general Module 2: Supervision and Mentoring: with a focus on the relationship between PhD researchers and their supervisors and mentors Module 3: Good Academic Practices: most recommended good academic research practices when it comes to: 1. Cette session de sensibilisation vous permet d’acquérir en un temps record une compréhension du champ de l’éthique de la recherche et des enjeux qui en font partie (éthique animale, éthique humaine, RGPD). Souvent confondue avec l’intégrité et la déontologie scientifique (contrôle de l’activité scientifique par et pour les scientifiques), l’éthique de la recherche est née de la réponse sociétale (contrôle de l’activité scientifique par la société) apportée à la suite de scandales historiques mettant en jeu des recherches ou des avancées scientifiques, ainsi que de la prise en compte dans le champs de la recherche d’attentes citoyennes grandissantes (bien-être animal, respect des droits de l’homme,…). Dans ses développements les plus récents, l’éthique de la recherche s’intègre à un ensemble de considérations plus larges qui renvoient à la Recherche responsable, ce qui inclut notamment les usages duaux de la recherche, les partenariats institutionnels à risque, les pratiques de recherche extractives ou encore la préoccupation écologique relatives à des pratiques de recherche durables. Les attentes envers des pratiques de recherche responsables concernent désormais l’ensemble des champs disciplinaires et il est recommandé de s’y former dès le début de la carrière scientifique Dans un format resserré de 3 heures, mêlant cas pratiques, enjeux historique s et renseignements pratiques, cette session constitue un passage incontournable pour qui veut s’orienter avec plus de clarté dans le champ complexe des enjeux éthiques de la recherche.

Introduction à l’argumentation et à la délibération éthique

La science vous maitrisez, merci ! Mais vous vous sentez parfois mal à l’aise pour répondre quand on vous pose des questions sur l’utilité sociale de vos recherches, ou sur les retombées – positives ou négatives - de celles-ci, voire sur certains enjeux éthiques qu’elles comporteraient. Si vous reconnaissez l’intérêt potentiel de ces questionnements, vous ne vous sentez pas forcément outillé.e pour y répondre au-delà de ce qui excède la technique et le rationnel scientifique. La formation « Sensibilisation à l’argumentation éthique » se propose de vous aider à : - À identifier ce qu’est un argument valable au plan éthique, en quoi il se distingue d’un argument scientifique, juridique ou moral ; - A repérer les arguments fallacieux ou d’autorité et à y répondre efficacement ; - A formuler de façon détaillée une réponse à des questions qui dépassent le cadre scientifique pour aborder celui des valeurs, et à débattre de façon collégiale sur des questions sensibles. En appliquant la philosophie « learning by doing », la formation proposée est entièrement conduite sous la forme d’exercices pratiques d’une difficulté croissante, visant à vous faire acquérir l’aisance souhaitée dans les discussions éthique et sociétale auxquelles vous pourriez être confronté.es. Encadrés par une ethicienne expérimentée, les exercices pratiques sont inspirés de questions éthiques actuelles.

AI and ESG: Friend or Foe? PHD WinterSchool 2026

KBC organises a Winter School for a select group of PhD candidates and postdocs of the Belgian universities. This edition, which is titled AI and Environment, Social and Governance (ESG): Friend or Foe? has the following to offer: - Career stories of PhD holders - 2 participating companies with real-world cases to be tackled in interdisciplinary teams (across research backgrounds and universities): KBC and Cordeel. - 2 participating companies to present: Monsana and Trevi. This Winter School targets PhD candidates (≥ 3rd year of their PhD trajectory) and postdocs of the Belgian universities who want to get an inside view of the corporate world, and reflect on labour market trends and challenges, innovation as driver for sustainability, … ; - want to learn from PhDs coming from different academic backgrounds why they decided to transfer to the corporate world, which competences they brought to the work floor, and which competences still needed further developing; - want to expand their professional network.
