The mystery of the

Lost Manuscript

Branching scenario adventure

Start

At the University of Salamanca library, Clara, a graduate student in Art History, is consulting an ancient copy to add it as a bibliography to her thesis project. As she turns the pages, a piece of paper falls to the ground. It’s a very old note mentioning a “lost manuscript” with secrets about the Golden Age.

The manuscript is located within the university itself, so without hesitation, she embarks on the investigation.

Which path does Clara choose to begin her search?

Professor Ramírez listens to her enthusiastically. He tells her a theory about secret passages in the university and offers to accompany her on the exploration. They will need to go at night so that the university staff does not find out.

Clara must decide what to do:

Clara finds cryptic references to a missing codex from 1783. But she is not the only one searching for information about that codex; Diego Herrera's name appears several times in the computer system. Diego is a colleague of Clara who is also looking for bibliographic treasures.

Diego has a lot of talent, but Clara has never really liked him.

At night, Clara and Professor Ramírez walk through the damp, dark tunnels beneath the classrooms. They find a sealed door with ancient symbols.

What should Clara and the professor do?

Clara thanks the teacher for his help, but decides to continue alone. Back in the catalogs, she reviews old records until something catches her attention: an almost illegible entry, accompanied by an 18th-century map. According to the file, the original document is kept in the Historical Archive… and no one has consulted it in decades.

What should Clara do?

Against all odds, Diego turns out to be more likable than Clara remembered. Her contagious enthusiasm and her way of connecting impossible data surprises her. Between laughs and theories, they discover a note in Latin hidden among the records: it mentions a mysterious place… “the hidden classroom.”

What will Clara do now?

Clara discovers a yellowed news article: in 1804, a fire destroyed part of the library. After the fire, some books were moved to a nearby convent on the outskirts of the city.

What should Clara do?

Clara and Professor Ramirez open the old stone door and discover an urn with the manuscript intact. Ramirez tries to stop her, but as he lifts the lid, the book turns to dust in the light. The professor observes silently, knowing that the legend was true. Clara looks at the ashes: the manuscript has disappeared, but its story finally lives on.

Clara and Professor Ramirez calmly decipher the hidden pattern among the runes. By gently turning them, they open the room without causing any damage and find the manuscript intact. Together, they document it accurately. For the first time, knowledge is not lost: it is shared.

Clara submits her application and, after several days of paperwork, manages to access the Historical Archive. There, she deciphers the keys of the lost manuscript and writes a brilliant report. Her discovery is officially published, turning the mystery into shared knowledge.

At the university, her name stands out among the researchers, while Professor Ramírez watches her with pride.

Clara waits for the building to be empty and enters the Archive with a flashlight. After several attempts, she finds the original map and a note that directly mentions the lost manuscript. Just as she copies a phrase, she is caught by the night guard. She is penalized for unauthorized access and her investigation is suspended, but she keeps in her notebook those few words, a clue only she knows… and that no one can take away from her.

Following the clues from the note in Latin, Clara and Diego find a hidden entrance in the old wing of the university. After several attempts, they access the forgotten classroom, full of dust, books, and scrolls. On a table awaits the lost manuscript. They look at each other in silence, knowing that the discovery was the result of their collaboration. Days later, they jointly sign the report that makes history.

Clara takes advantage of a distraction and gets ahead of Diego. Using the notes they deciphered together, she finds the entrance to the hidden classroom and sneaks in alone. There, the manuscript awaits her, covered in dust and silence. She quickly examines it, notes the essentials, and leaves without being seen. The next day, Diego confronts her without understanding how she got so far without him. Clara avoids his gaze: she has obtained the manuscript, but also a shadow that will always accompany her.

Following the clues of the fire, Clara travels to a convent where rescued books from the flames are kept. The nuns welcome her kindly but deny the existence of the manuscript. That night, Clara secretly returns to the archive and finds it, wrapped in linen and sealed with wax. She knows she doesn't have permission, but if she doesn't rescue it, it will remain hidden again.

At dawn, the manuscript travels with her to Salamanca. Knowledge, she thinks, should not be guarded, but shared.

Clara spends weeks crossing records, requesting permissions, and reviewing inventories that never match. In each office, someone tells her that the manuscript “is not on record,” that perhaps it “never existed.” But Clara knows they are lying, or that they prefer not to look too far back. Exhausted, she closes her notebook once more. The mystery remains, buried among seals and signatures, protected not by time… but by bureaucracy.
