(7) As if the situation wasn’t bad enough for these desperate immigrants, the poor Irish travelers had to suffer through horrific boat rides across the Atlantic Ocean. They were crammed into tiny spaces below decks without good food or proper sanitation. During the journeys, many people became sick and died.

(5) In 1845 Irish farmers went to harvest their potato crops, just as they had done for centuries. This time, however, when they dug into the ground, the potatoes they found were a blackish color. All across Ireland, the same thing was happening. Most of the season’s potatoes were ruined.

(8) Many survived the journey, however. Between 1845 and 1860, about 1.7 million Irish immigrants arrived in the United States. Most of them landed in large port cities on the east coast such as Boston, New York, and Philadelphia. Many of them stepped off the boats weary, tired, ill, and without money.
