What happens when apex predators are removed?

After apex predators like wolves were removed from Yellowstone, elk populations boomed. Elk overgrazed young willow, aspen, and cottonwood trees, particularly along riverbanks. Without the trees, stream banks eroded, water bodies became murkier, and beaver habitats declined. Fish, amphibians, and other riparian species suffered from habitat loss and poor water quality.

What happens when apex predators are removed?

Overgrazing also reduced berry-producing shrubs, harming grizzly bears and pollinators. Plants lost to heavy browsing used to provide shelter for small mammals and birds. When wolves were reintroduced in 1995, many of these vegetation communities began recovering. River areas showed new growth, and ecosystem processes like dam-building by beavers resumed.
