WHAT IS THE EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGES?

The European Day of Languages is celebrated every year on September 26th. It was created in 2001 by the Council of Europe to celebrate the rich variety of languages spoken across the continent. On this day, we remember how important it is to learn new languages, respect different cultures, and keep Europe’s linguistic diversity alive.

Why do we celebrate it?

We celebrate this day to show that every language matters. Whether it’s a big language like English or a small regional one, each language is part of someone’s identity. Learning and speaking different languages helps us communicate, understand each other better, and build a more united Europe. It’s also fun and opens doors to many opportunities!

Fun Facts About Languages

Did you know that there are over 200 languages spoken in Europe? The European Union has 24 official languages, but there are many more regional and minority ones. Some people grow up speaking two or three languages at home! Also, learning languages improves your memory, problem‑solving skills, and can help you find better jobs in the future.

How Do People Celebrate?

Across Europe, schools and communities organize language games, workshops, and cultural events on this day. People try saying greetings in many languages, explore traditional food and music, or learn fun facts about other countries. It’s a great chance to discover something new and appreciate how diverse and connected Europe really is.

A Unique Language: Basque (Euskara)

One of the most special languages in Europe is Basque, or Euskara. It is spoken in the Basque Country, a region in northern Spain and southwest France. What’s amazing about Basque is that it’s not related to any other language in the world — it’s a mystery where it came from! Some common Basque words are Kaixo (hello), Eskerrik asko (thank you), and Agur (goodbye). Even today, many children in that region grow up speaking both Basque and Spanish — they are bilingual from a young age!”

“"Basque, or Euskara, is one of the most unique languages in Europe. It’s spoken in the Basque Country, a region between Spain and France. What makes it so special is that it’s a language isolate — that means it’s not related to any other language in the world! It’s also one of the oldest languages in Europe, even older than Latin. Nobody really knows where it comes from. Today, many people still speak it, and children in the Basque Country learn both Basque and Spanish at school.

Why Are Languages Important?

Languages help us connect with others, understand different cultures, and open our minds. When we speak another language, even just a little, we show respect and curiosity. Languages also help us travel, make friends, and think in new ways. Every language we learn gives us a new way to see the world.
