the raven

1845

It tells the story of a man mourning the loss of his beloved Lenore and being visited by a mysterious raven. Main ideas / themes: Grief and loss – the pain of losing someone you love. Madness – how sorrow can drive a person to despair. The supernatural – the mysterious, possibly symbolic raven. Tone: dark, melancholic, and haunting. Symbolism: the raven often represents death, memory, or eternal mourning.

The poem begins with the narrator sitting alone at night, reading to forget his sorrow over Lenore’s death. He hears a knock and eventually a raven flies into his room, perching on a statue of Pallas (Athena), the goddess of wisdom. The man asks the bird questions, but it only replies with one word: “Nevermore.” As the poem continues, the man becomes increasingly desperate and disturbed, interpreting the raven’s repeated “Nevermore” as a prophecy that he will never see Lenore again and will never escape his grief.
