Inês Pereira (personagem principal):

Jovem anbiciosa e fútil que deseja um casamento que lhe traga conforto. Não contenta-se com a simples vida que tem com a sua mãe e despreza homens justos e honestos. É bastante influênciada pelas aparências e acaba por fazer escolhas basenando-se no que acha "ser melhor".

Brás de Mata (Escudeiro):

É um homem nobre, vaidoso e autoritário. Mostra-se educado no começo e conquista Inês com palavras bonitas, mas, depois do casamento, revela-se autoritário, ciumento e violento. Obriga Inês a ficar trancada em casa e não a deixa ter liberdade. Representa a nobreza arrogante e sem sentimentos verdadeiros.

Pêro Marques:

Camponês honesto, trabalhador e ingênuo. Tem pouca educação, mas é fiel e bondoso. Ama Inês e aceita tudo por ela, mesmo quando é humilhado. Apesar de parecer tolo, tem uma pureza que no final é enganado por Inês para que ela consiga liberdade. Simboliza o povo simples e sincero, mas também a ingenuidade daqueles que confiam demais.

Lianor Vaz (Alcoviteira):

Uma mulher falsa e interesseira que engana Inês, apresentando-lhe Brás da Mata como um bom marido. Usa a sua esperteza e boa conversa para manipular e tirar proveito da situação. Representa a falsidade, a mentira e a corrupção da sociedade da época.
