Assessment Objectives

Quotations and Text References

Quotations and direct references from the text are essential to support your points

Critical Interpretation - AO1

To gain good marks you need to show critical interpretation in your response. This means reading between the lines about the setting and character and linking these to the key themes and ideas in the play as well as the writer's intention.

Language Structure and Form - AO2

To show an understanding of this you need to identify word choices in the characters and stage directions. For example how does Priestley's choice of words enhance the portrayal of Mr Birling's arrogance and ignorance. Use correct subject terms such as 'symbolism', 'dramatic irony' 'simile' or 'adjective'.

Context - AO3

It is important to show the examiner you understand context. Try and add a context comment where appropriate throughout your essay. For example mentioning social and political context is fine but connect Mr Birling's character to historical events and how these reflect Priestley's purpose.

Clear communication and SPAG - AO4

The maximum is 4 marks from the total of 34 marks. Please ensure you are writing in clear sentences with correct spelling, punctuation and grammar. Please write in paragraphs and use a range of vocabulary and sentence types to achieve control of meaning. Be clear!

Stretch it Task

Re-write the paragraph making sure that you have covered AO1, AO2, AO3 and check you have clear sentence, spelling, punctuation and grammar for AO4.

At the start of the play, Birling's speech about community being 'mixed up like bees in a hive' reveals his belief in individualism over social responsibility. This shows that he thinks everyone should just look after themselves rather than work together. Priestley uses Birling to highlight the theme of social class and responsibility. Birling's dismissive attitude towards the idea of community is important because it contrasts with the inspector's message that everyone is connected and responsible for one another.

Consider how Priestley uses language choices to show Birling's character trait. Consider how his attitude is a reflection of the historical context of the time when the play was set.
