Strategic Financing and Economic Analysis for Ecosystem Restoration

Task 9: Tools and key considerations for conducting a cost-benefit analysis

Start

Tools for Conducting a Cost-Benefit Analysis

These tools and resources offer frameworks, data, and guidance for valuing restoration benefits and estimating economic impacts:

Integrating Ecosystem Values into Cost-Benefit Analysis

IPBES Assessment Report on Land Degradation and Restoration

Economics of Forest Landscape Restoration

Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) Country Profiles

TEER (The Economics of Ecosystem Restoration) Template

MOOC: A Business Approach to Sustainable Landscape Restoration

Key Considerations When Conducting a CBA

During this step, consider the following:

  • When you are conducting a cost-benefit analysis, be sure to remember that restoration should not focus only on one ecosystem service. Focusing on one benefit may reduce the restoration potential in a landscape, or may lead to a program that either does not optimize recovery of biodiversity, or could cause biodiversity degradation. Focusing on a broad suite of benefits is likely to result in greater biodiversity, social, and ecosystem services benefits.
  • As you make your calculations, be sure to consider as many potential benefits and costs as can be responsibly quantified. Be aware of the tradeoff between including all legitimate sources of benefit, and increasing skepticism of your analysis if values are included poorly.
  • Include and distinguish market and non-market benefits, and private and public goods.
  • Do not assume that baseline scenario values for ecosystem services are zero.

Reflection

  • Are you considering a wide enough range of costs and benefits in your restoration analysis?
  • Which of these tools could be most useful for your restoration planning?
  • How might stakeholder engagement improve the credibility and relevance of your CBA?

IPBES Assessment Report on Land Degradation and Restoration This report assesses the costs and benefits of different management options in terms of priorities in relation to ecosystem restoration. Access here.

Economics of Forest Landscape Restoration This study guides users on how to make credible estimations of the economic impacts of FLR at a landscape level. Access here.

Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) Country Profiles The country profiles present evidence-based arguments that support investment in LDN by showcasing the importance and multiple benefits of taking actions to avoid, reduce, and reverse land degradation. Access here.

TEER (The Economics of Ecosystem Restoration) Template TEER presents a standardized framework for the collection of data on the costs and benefits of restoration programs. The template offers a dashboard of the data that provides the basis for a cost-benefit analysis. Access here.

MOOC: A Business Approach to Sustainable Landscape Restoration This Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) offers comprehensive knowledge of landscape degradation and landscape restoration from both the perspective of natural science and from an economics and business administration perspective.
