Bins in the OR Suite

• Supply items that can be reprocessed (except tourniquets) should be put in the reprocessing bin

• Staplers are not reprocessed — wrap these in a table cover or drape and discard in regular trash
• Tourniquets are placed on the case cart for reprocessing
• Place reprocessing bins far away from anesthesia

• Only sharps go in the bins for sharps
• No bins should overflow (get a replacement container)

TecSys Point of Use

• Appropriately allocating and charging of medical supplies affects healthcare costs, accounting for 30 to 40 percent of the total costs a hospital incurs
• TecSys Point of Use is a tracking and inventory system to help us:

• Control inventory costs
• Accurately capture charges for reimbursement
• Track inventory, improving the reordering process

• TecSys is accessed from the Intra-Op chart in eStar/Epic

Explants

• Documentation of explanted devices in eStar/Epic is critical to capture accurate data (important for warranty tracking, etc.)
• At the time of the explant surgery:

Document as much implant data as possible (from patient report/records or from StarPanel for past VUMC implants)

Implant in eStar/Epic

Implant NOT in eStar/Epic

• The circulator adds it via the Historical Implant section first

• Go to the Implant tab

• Initiate the Explant Existing function

• Items being explanted are not added to TecSys POU

If you entered the implant in the Historical Implants tab, the implant will be an option in the pop-up window after Explant Existing is clicked

Post-op Checklist

• Initiated by circulator just prior to closing counts or before primary surgeon leaves the room (it is the attending surgeon's responsibility to ensure this is completed)

• Remember to fill out the back side of the Face-to-Face Handoff Sheet
• Keep up with the Events in eStar/Epic to get a timely PACU slot

Circulator Responsibilities

Anesthesia Provider Responsibilities

• Notify Flow Charge Nurse of the need for a bed

• Makes Equipment Notification call at when wound is closed or anesthesia emergence (similar timing as requesting a PACU slot)
• Makes a Rolling call as the patient leaves the OR
• In addition to "Out of Room," the circulator must click "Perioperative Care Complete" in Events
• Click "All Events" in the Events dropdown to see this option
