The Gaitanaki (The Maypole)
Gaitanaki is a traditional Carnival custom where participants dance around a pole weaving colorful ribbons that they hold in their hands. The dance is circular and dancer's movements cause the ribbons to wrap around the pole creating a "braided" effect, also known as "Gaitanaki". Reversing the direction of dance unwinds the ribbons and completes the custom.
Math Challenge
- There are 6 red ribbons on the Gaitanaki but while the children were playing at Niki's kindergarten, 3 red ribbons were cut. How many red ribbons are left on the Gaitanaki now for the game to continue?
New Year´s Eve
Spain
In Spain, New Year’s Eve is called "Nochevieja," or "Old Night." Families and friends gather together to bid farewell to the old year. The best part? The 12 Grapes! At midnight, when the clock chimes 12 times, people eat one grape for each chime, 12 grapes in total. It brings good luck for each month of the new year. It’s tricky but lots of fun. Everyone laughs while trying to keep up with the clock!
Join Mathsy in our Grape Countdown Challenge!
🟡
- You start with 12 grapes.
- Each time the clock goes DING!, you eat 1 grape.
- How many grapes do you have left after each chime?
- Can you draw the grapes disappearing one by one?
The customs of Lazarus saturday
The last Saturday before Holy Week marks the celebration of the Resurrection of Lazarus. Together with Palm Sunday, it is considered one of the only "joyful" days of Lent.
Lazarakia for the soul of Lazarus... Women used to make special small loaves of bread called Lazarakia, shaped like a shrouded human figure. Each housewife would knead as many Lazarakia as the number of children in her family. The Lazarakia are representing Lazarus as he is depicted in icons. Their little hands are crossed, and two cloves are used for eyes. They have no mouth, because - according to tradition - Lazarus was so frightened in the world of dead that he never smiled again in his second life. The exact recipe for the dough does not matter. What matters is that the custom is observed.
