The first bottled water for sale came from a UK plant, Holy Well.
Nalgene bottles are used at the “Miracle on Ice” Olympics (1980 U.S. Men’s Hockey Team), displaying visibility in popular culture/national events, which helped raise awareness, showing durability and utility.
Jersey City, NJ, became the first U.S. city to implement continuous, large-scale chlorination of its public water supply.
Nathaniel Wyeth, a DuPont engineer, patented the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle. The Mountain Spring Water Company in CA launched the first commercial plastic water bottles, using Wyeth's new technology.

Klean Kanteen, founded in 2002, signaled the beginning of stainless steel reusable bottles for personal hydration, marking a shift toward health/environmental concerns; more stylish, more durable, more attractive for broader audiences including youth and school use.

bisphenol A (BPA) concerns led to “reusable BPA‑free water bottles” being launched. Parents, schools, youth became more aware of safety and reusable bottles shifted from outdoor gear to school/daily use.
