What do you know about AI?

Wrong and Dangerous

There are ways for students to use AI responsibly. AI, like a calculator or a dictionary, is a tool. You can use it in the right way or the wrong way.
Current models of AI simply cannot replicate the human element that teachers bring to their classrooms. They can, however, be a great help to teachers.
No AI detector is 100% accurate. There are tell-tale signs that text has been AI generated, but as models get better, the output gets better and harder to detect.
Though young people are increasingly treating AI like a companion, it is dangerous to do so. Chatbots merely predict what word should come next. They cannot substitute for real human connection.

How AI Works
Large Language Models
LLMs are better read than you are, but they still can't think about what they've read. They are great at recognizing patterns because they've been given so many to study, but they are still just predicting what comes next.
"A large language model (LLM) is a type of artificial intelligence that can generate human language and perform related tasks. These models are trained on huge datasets, often containing billions of words. By analyzing all this data, the LLM learns patterns and rules of language, similar to the way a human learns to communicate through exposure to language."

AI Input vs. Output
Input
Output
AI is trained on massive amounts of human generated data. Because the data was created by humans, AI is prone to the same biases and limitations that humans are. Whether this data was gathered and used ethically is also still being debated.
AI is excellent at synthesizing information, but it does not understand the information it is synthesizing, so its output can be predictable and boring. The best outputs happen when paired with the expertise of the human prompting it.
VS
Types of AI
Predictive AI
Generative AI
Agentic AI
Forecasts what might happen next Like when Netflix recommends a show you might like
Creates new content Might be text, video, audio, images, or code
Makes decisions and takes action to complete tasks with minimal human intervention Like a car that drives itself

The REality Check
- Students have always cheated. Studies have up to 80% of high schoolers admitting to cheating before ChatGPT was released.
- Studies done since the release of ChatGPT suggest the amount of cheating hasn't changed, only the method.
- One study found 11% of students admitting to using AI to complete an entire assignment. (Lee, Pope, Miles, Zarate, 2024)

The REality Check
- AI "detectors" have been demonstrated to be unreliable. They certainly should not be used as the only piece of evidence that a student misused AI.
- Not all student uses of AI are inappropriate, and not all students are excited about using it.
- Emphasizing academic integrity and rethinking assignments are key to fighting the use of AI for cheating.
- AI Literacy for both teachers and students is of top importance.
A Simple Way to Start
AI generated Images As An Intro to AI in the classroom
- AI generated images can be a fun and easy way to try AI.
- It's difficult to get it "wrong," and gives students a way to practice prompting.
- Use a school safe application like Padlet or Adobe Express, so you have content moderation tools monitoring and stopping the worst possible offenses.
- Create images as icebreakers.
- Create images to illustrate a certain concept.
- Check their comprehension of a passage through AI generated images.
