Introduction to Biodiversity Credits

Task 1: Why are biodiversity credits emerging now?

Start

Why are biodiversity credits emerging now?

Biodiversity credits are gaining momentum following the adoption of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework in December 2022, at COP 15. Target 19(d) specifically calls for the development of credible and transparent biodiversity credit markets to help fund conservation efforts. This formal international recognition has sparked growing interest in biodiversity credits as a way to finance nature-positive actions at scale. It reflects a broader shift in awareness of the nature crisis, which is unfolding in parallel to the climate crisis and threatening ecosystems, economies, and communities alike.

In response to the estimated $700 billion annual biodiversity finance gap, which public funding alone will not bridge, biodiversity credits are seen as a promising mechanism to attract private investment in support of measurable, positive outcomes for nature. They have also been highlighted in the draft guidance on nature transition plans by The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) as one potential solution for organizations aiming to align with nature-related targets and manage biodiversity risks and opportunities.
