Nasce a Cittadella da genitori di nazionalità nigeriana. Il padre Ambrose, prima di emigrare in Italia, faceva il camionista a Lagos, mentre la madre Eunice era infermiera a Benin City; ha una sorella e un fratello, Angela e Andrea. Anche la cugina Terry Enweonwu è pallavolista. Nel 2014 ha ottenuto la cittadinanza italiana, dopo il rilascio al padre del passaporto italiano. Nel novembre 2018, in un'intervista al quotidiano Corriere della Sera, fa coming out, rivelando di essere fidanzata con una donna, che l'ha consolata a seguito della sconfitta al campionato mondiale 2018: la donna in questione si rivelerà poi essere la pallavolista Katarzyna Skorupa.
Quando era picolla
Ha iniziato a giocare a pallavolo a 12 anni, mostrando subito un grande talento. La sua infanzia è stata segnata da episodi di discriminazione razziale, come quello legato a un commento di un'insegnante che l'ha turbata profondamente. All'età di 13 anni si è trasferita in un collegio federale, un periodo che ha definito difficile e durante il quale sentiva il desiderio di tornare a casa.
CARIERA
La carriera di Paola Egonu è iniziata professionalmente nel 2013 con il Club Italia, per poi passare ad alti club come l'Igor Gorgonzola Novara e l'Imoco Volley Conegliano. Ha conquistato numerosi titoli con entrambi i club e la Nazionale Italiana, tra cui scudetti, Coppe Italia, Supercoppe italiane, Champions League e un Mondiale per club. Nel 2022 si è trasferita al VakıfBank Istanbul e nel 2025 tornerà in Italia per giocare con la Vero Volley Milano.
