Math107: Student Opportunities session
start
Just in time… or almost
You've begun working with colleagues at Careers and Employability at University of Liverpool. You've been tasked with helping them to get the word out about the range of opportunities available for our students! The excitement couldn't be greater. You arrive at the Career Studio as happy as a lark, but as you step through the door, you notice something strange and out of the ordinary, and everything is silent… There's no one in sight! You approach the Career Studio reception desk. There's a laptop switched on, and it seems to be waiting for you, as if it had something important to reveal...
Look at the laptop
ONE MOMENT!
Before starting, you need to review the Career Studio documentation on a range of student opportunities, so you can overcome the challenges without any issues. Where could it be...? Maybe there’s something at the Career Studio desk.

Part-time Jobs
Taking on a part-time job while studying gives you not only extra income, but also real-world work experience and better time management skills. Whether campus roles (library assistant, student ambassador), retail, hospitality, or remote micro-jobs, these positions help you practise teamwork, customer service, and ability to balance multiple priorities. If you're interested in exploring part-time job opportunities, log-on to Handshake, visit Career Studio, or visit our Part-time Jobs Fair, which usually runs each September. Balance is crucial, so try to opt for hours that won’t overly disrupt your studies. Over time, you’ll gain professional references and confidence in workplace settings. 💷

Global Opportunities
Studying abroad or undertaking international placements can be a transformative experience. At Liverpool, the Global Opportunities programme supports students to spend time overseas—through exchanges, internships, or study programmes—to gain cultural understanding, language skills, and global networks. Students often return with enhanced adaptability, confidence in cross-cultural teamwork, and a stronger CV that stands out to employers. To engage, you can contact Global Opportunities (saenq@liv.ac.uk) for more information on eligibility criteria and partner institutions. 🌍 Wondering where to go? Charles Barkla
Charles Glover Barkla (1877–1944) was a British physicist educated in Liverpool who originally studied mathematics and physics and later became renowned for his pioneering work in X-ray physics. In 1917 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for discovering that each chemical element emits its own “characteristic” X-rays and for demonstrating that X-rays can be polarised — key evidence that they behave like electromagnetic waves. After academic appointments at Liverpool and London, he was elected as Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 1912 and held the Chair of Natural Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh from 1913 until his death.
Dr Jaclyn Bell
Dr Jaclyn Bell is an award-winning mathematician, theoretical particle physicist, and science communicator from Liverpool. A first-generation university graduate, she completed her BSc, MSc, and PhD in Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the University of Liverpool before going on to champion diversity and inclusion in STEM through roles with the British Science Association, the Science Museum, and now as a Teaching Fellow in Computing at Imperial College London. A finalist on the BBC’s Astronauts: Do You Have What It Takes?, Jaclyn continues to pursue her dream of becoming the first Scouser in space, inspiring young people to follow ambitious paths in science and technology.
Insight Days and Spring Weeks
Insight days or spring weeks are short, structured programmes by firms (often in fields like finance, tax, audit and consulting) that introduce students to working life in that sector. During these schemes, participants may rotate through departments, attend workshops and shadow professionals. Companies use them to spot future talent, and participants may receive offers or fast-track access to graduate programmes. For more information, the Insights Scheme and Spring Weeks section on Higherin is a good starting point.https://higherin.com/schemes/insights-spring-weeks

Volunteering
Volunteering offers students a chance to contribute to their community, develop transferable skills, and explore causes they care about. Whether through local charities, university societies, or community projects, volunteering can build leadership, communication, and organisational experience. Students can engage by registering as a volunteer with Liverpool Guild of Students, browsing volunteering websites, contacting local charities or organisations, or joining campus community outreach initiatives. Even part-time volunteer roles can show commitment, empathy, and initiative on your CV, and often lead to meaningful connections and personal growth. ✨ Why not visit: https://www.liverpoolguild.org/opportunities/volunteering/

Dame Stella Rimington
Dame Stella Rimington, the first female Director-General of MI5, did not study mathematics at Liverpool, but her career in intelligence demonstrates the value of the analytical and problem-solving mindset often associated with the subject. She completed a Diploma in Archive Studies in 1959 and was later awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD) in 2005 by the University of Liverpool. Although her academic background was in the humanities, Rimington’s leadership at the helm of the Security Service required many of the same skills nurtured through mathematical study — logical reasoning, the ability to identify patterns in complex information, and careful evaluation of evidence. Her success in one of the most demanding and high-stakes roles in public service highlights how the structured, strategic thinking often linked to mathematics can underpin effective intelligence analysis, risk management, and decision-making at the highest level.
