The operating system is responsible for many tasks, including: – managing files – handling interrupts – providing an interface – managing peripherals and drivers – managing memory – managing multitasking – providing a platform for running applications – providing system security – managing user accounts

Hardware, Firmware and the OS

Hardware: Physical components of the computer. Firmware: Permanent software stored on a chip; starts hardware and loads the OS. Operating System: Loads from storage, controls the hardware, runs applications. Applications: Depend on the OS to access hardware.
