Observing the Pack
Here in the lush foothills of the mountains, we observe the wolf pack; they are a close-knit family with the alpha male and female at the heart. These wolves have travelled together for many miles and now pause on an outcrop to survey the land. From this vantage point, they can rest – they must contemplate their next meal. Wolves have inhabited these lands for thousands of years, benefitting from many resources: water, shelter and an abundance of food. They truly are part of the land and the land is part of them.
Now something immediately attracts their attention, as, ears pricked, they turn in unison. They have acute hearing, sensing movement long before any animals appear. And there, in a far-off valley, we see the source of their fascination – a herd of deer graze absent-mindedly below. Deer have been hunted by wolves for centuries; they will provide much needed sustenance for this hungry pack.
Silent and still, the amber eyes of the predators lock onto their unsuspecting prey. A young male leans forwards, studying the sizeable herd. His unparalleled sense of smell picks up the faint scent that drifts on the gentle morning breeze. Generations of deer have populated this land, feasting on the succulent grass, grateful for the refreshing lake and the safety of the dense forest. But today, it seems, the security of their safe-haven will be shattered.
We can now see movement in the pack; the juvenile places two meagre paws on the back of his unflinching older sister. Not even the weight of her young sibling can tear the mature female’s eyes away from the deer – she is focused. Determined. The immaturity of this juvenile is apparent as he is totally unaware of what is going on around him: the hunt, the chase or the kill. But he will learn; the pack will teach him. He lifts his head and a paltry whine escapes his mouth.
We leave the pack now and will join them again later to discover more about the wonderful ways of the wolf.
