Common Types of Injuries

  • Sprains
    • Ligament Tears (ACL- forward movement)2
      • pivot or cutting maneuvers
  • Fractures
    • Older populations
    • Stress Fractures (Wrist, Hand, Ankles, Foot)3
  • Dislocations (shoulder- most common)
  • Muscle Strains
    • Hamstring, Quadricepts, Gastrocnemius, Hip flexor strain4,7

Causes and Risk Factors5

  • Poor warm up or cool down
  • Muscle imbalances
  • Poor form and techniques
  • Dehydration / Poor Nutrition
    • Fatigue
  • Risks: Long term repetitive motions, repetative strain and sudden injuries

Injury Prevention Strategies

What does injury prevention refer to?

"activities to prevent, treat, and/ or reduce injury related disabilites" 1

Why would it be beneficial to have proper technique and form?
Runners/Sprinters6
Weightlifting
  • Resting muscles are inactive muscles
  • Tissue Temperature and Elasticity
  • Dynamic Stretches ( leg swings, cossak squat )
    • Improve range of muscle and activate muscle
  • Mobility
  • Sprinters and Jumpers: Higher Strain on Muscles, Hip Flexors (training muscles to move the way they should aka form)
  • Same logic as runners and sprinters
  • Extremely important to have proper form and technique ( strong man challenge )
    • Wont be able to perform movment
    • Injury in the process

Making a plan

aka being proactive to prevent and manage injuries
  • Set SMART goals8
    • Specific- how much
    • Measurable- Tracking
    • Achievable and Realistic
    • Time- weekly/monthly goal"
  • Take preventative actions
    • Warm ups
    • Implementing Rest days
    • Be aware of environment
  • Do not put off treatment of injuries
    • Seek professional help if concerned- "better to be safe than sorry"
  • Evaluate and Reflect
    • Journal Entries
      • What's working/what's not
      • Adjust routine and intensity as needed

Long Term Recovery: Physical Therapy Approach9

1.Misconception: RICE Method 2. Load Managment 3. Educate (future injury)

Conclusion

Don't forget to LEAVE your EGO at the DOOR
