About the Creators of In Her Shoes®

This online journey was created with the permission of the Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence (WSCADV), the original creators of In Her Shoes®. WSCADV is the leading voice to end domestic violence in Washington State. They work to improve how communities respond to survivors and to create a world where all people can live and love without fear. In Her Shoes® is a groundbreaking experiential learning tool that helps participants understand the complex choices faced by people in abusive relationships. It is used in over 900 communities across the United States to educate professionals and the public about domestic violence.

RELEASE 5

I found a place to call my own — a space that finally feels safe, where I can breathe and begin to imagine what life might look like on my own terms. I’ve come to this point after so many turns — seeking guidance from my elders and finding strength in small steps forward. Each choice has brought me closer to stability, though uncertainty still lingers. Now that I have housing, I’ve decided to visit the tribal court.

COURT CARD #2

You arrive at court, feeling confident and like you have done a lot to help get your children back. The judge seems understanding but says that both parents have custody and there is nothing he can do immediately. He does grant you a protection order but you still don’t have your kids. The judge encourages you to go to the domestic violence advocate.

RELEASE #5

The courtroom feels heavy as Sierra hears the judge’s words. She will not be getting her children back today. The judge suggests she speak with a domestic violence advocate before taking her next steps. It’s not the outcome she hoped for, but it’s another turning point in her journey. Sierra leaves the courthouse carrying both heartache and a flicker of determination. Come back next week to walk beside Sierra as she considers her next decision — and the path that may change everything.
