Captains should review their fellows’ Brightspace learner data at least once a week to stay on top of deliverables and catch potential issues early...

Weekly check-ins help captains identify incomplete assignments, missed attendance, or badge gaps before they become bigger problems. This regular rhythm ensures fellows receive timely reminders, support, and accountability, which ultimately keeps them on track to meet Career Readiness milestones.

Reaching out to the fellow individually allows the Captain to identify any barriers the fellow might be facing and offer targeted support early on.

Regularly checking Brightspace data helps captains spot patterns—like missing modules, lack of badges, or inactivity—before they become major setbacks. A personal check-in is more effective than generic reminders or waiting until the end because it shows proactive support, builds accountability, and helps the fellow get back on track in time to meet program expectations.

It's week 10 of program and you decide to check in with your fellow on her Prentus Job Tracker. During the check in, she updates you (listen to the audio recording).

Acknowledging the fellow’s workload shows empathy and support, while clearly explaining the 15-job application requirement reinforces accountability.

By helping the fellow create a realistic plan, the Captain can keep them on track to meet program expectations without adding unnecessary pressure. This balanced approach builds trust, encourages follow-through, and ensures the fellow understands both the expectations and the support available to help them meet them.

Prentus, not Brightspace, is the platform used to review resumes, LinkedIn portfolios, and track job applications.

Brightspace is where captains grade head and technical assignments and take attendance, but it does not house job application data. Using the correct platform ensures you’re accessing accurate information and supporting fellows effectively.

It’s your first Pod Night as a Captain, and the session is about to begin.

You log onto Zoom early, greet fellows as they arrive, and then get ready to kick off the evening.
  1. Take Attendance → Log attendance in Brightspace as fellows arrive.
  2. Review Deliverables → Open the weekly Brightspace announcement to check mandatory tasks.
  3. Pod Night Operations → Move into your breakout room to support fellows.
  4. Icebreaker → Kick things off with a quick 10-minute icebreaker.
  5. Checklist Review → Use the Pod Night checklist to align on deliverables.
  6. Record Notes → Document each fellow’s progress on the checklist.
  7. Debrief → Flag any issues with your PM or Captain group.

The best way to support the fellow is by verifying their progress through the right systems and communicating clearly.

Reviewing the weekly Brightspace announcement ensures they’re aligned with current deliverables, and checking Prentus confirms their job application status. Reassuring them and flagging any gaps to the PM keeps everyone informed and prevents issues from slipping through. Simply waiting or assuming everything is complete wouldn’t address their concern or maintain accountability.
