The Active Voice

➡ The subject does the action. Structure: Subject + verb + object Example: The chef cooks the meal.

The Passive Voice

➡ The subject receives the action.The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence. Structure: Object + to be (conjugated) + past participle (+ by + agent) Example: The meal is cooked (by the chef).

PRESENT SIMPLE/ PRESENT CONTINUOUS

Present Simple

Subject + base verb For he / she / it, we add -s to the verb

USE (When do we use it?) We use the Present Simple to talk about: 1. Habits and routines ➤ I wake up at 7 a.m. 2. Facts and general truths ➤ Water boils at 100°C. 3.Permanent situations ➤ She lives in Paris. 4. Schedules and timetables (especially transport) ➤ The train leaves at 6 p.m.

Present Continuous

Subject + to be (present) + verb-ing
  • now, right now, at the moment

USE (When do we use it?) We use the Present Continuous to talk about: 1.Actions happening now➤ She is talking on the phone right now. 2.Temporary situations➤ I’m staying with a friend this week. 3.Future plans (with time expression)➤ We’re meeting at 8 p.m. tonight.
