Telegraph (Electric & Optical)
Radio (broadcast)

The telegraph revolutionized society when in 1844, Samuel F. B. Morse successfully sent a message from the Senate wing of the U.S. Capitol to Baltimore, Maryland. The telegraph is a machine that transmits printed messages by coded signal over distances by wire or radio waves. The impact of the telegraph as reflected in the creation of International Telegraph Union with the purpose of international communication.

The first licensed radio station that was commercialized in the US was KDKA in Pittsburgh, it began broadcasting in 1920 from a rooftop. By 1930, about 40% of all Americans owned a radio. The early public debate about the effect of radio on society and culture is a familiar-sounding chorus for the 21st century Internet revolution debates over early hype and dangers.

Fun fact: The first message transmitted through the telegraph was “What hath God wrought!” by Samuel Morse.
Fun fact: The number of licensed broadcast stations surged from five in 1921 to 500 by 1924. Radio quickly became a consumer craze.

Virtual Reality
Artificial Intelligence

Prediction: Because VR hardware prices continue to drop and become more accessible to pockets, it can potentially transform the way people become aware of and interact with social issues. By placing people into experiences that simulate the struggles that marginalized groups or people in crisis face, VR can cause us to emotionally invest in the way that traditional education or the news cannot.

Prediction: AI has the capability to bridge gaps in learning, workplace accessibility, and social services through technology that is custom-made to address the specific needs of the individual. For example, AI can help in the diagnosis of learning disabilities and help provide mental health services, or ensure accessibility for individuals with disabilities.

Reflection

Today we learned that technology plays a crucial role in promoting social change thanks to social media apps and other digital tools. We learned that it can be very powerful and it can have a great impact on people’s perspectives of social issues. The tool or innovation that had the greatest impact we would say that it’s social media, but more specifically, TikTok. This is because news about social injustices have spread like wildfire and have created real change in the real world. An example is #BlackLivesMatter, which went viral thanks to several videos on TikTok from creator that re-told the story several times. Some of the potential risks of relying too much on technology can be the dependance that we can have on it, the spread of misinformation or fake news, and also getting to a point where we can not bring real change into the world and only on social media. This means, society being too lazy to take real action offline after they already “gave their support” by liking a video or commenting on it.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR VISIT!

TikTok

TikTok has become a very popular and powerful platform over the past few years. It started since Musically and regained fame when it changed its name to TikTok. This social media platform is used for several things including dancing videos, makeup videos and lifestyle videos, but it can have a great impact when used for social movements and for spreading the word and awareness about specific social issues.

X or formerly known as Twitter is a social media app that people use to post small messages or “tweets” with text, photos, images, memes and more about any subject, the most prominent ones are about politics and celebrities. Like TikTok, X is used to spread knowledge on social problems that happen around the globe, and so people can start popular threads and hashtags to take the movement outside of the app.

Instagram

Instagram is one of the biggest and most popular social media platforms in the world during our current era. In this app people can post images, videos, stories, notes, reels and more. Thanks to this diversity of content people have been using Instagram for years to spread different social issues, and many times have taken the movement to the streets.
