Leg 1 - Perth to BunburyYour South West Edge adventure begins in Perth / Boorloo, heading south through the coastal plains towards the bustling port town of Bunbury / Goomburrup. Known for its relaxed atmosphere and vibrant street art scene, Bunbury is also home to the renowned Dolphin Discovery Centre, where visitors can swim with wild dolphins or watch them play close to shore. Stroll along the scenic Koombana Bay foreshore, enjoy local cafes, and soak up the coastal charm that makes Bunbury a favourite first stop on the journey.

Leg 2 - Bunbury to Margaret River RegionLeaving Bunbury behind, travel through farmland and coastal towns before arriving in the world-renowned Margaret River Region. This area is celebrated for its surfing beaches like Surfers Point and its premium wineries, which produce some of Australia’s finest cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay. The drive also takes you through the Boranup Forest, where towering karri trees create a magical canopy above winding roads. Beneath the forest, a network of ancient limestone caves — including Mammoth and Lake Caves — offer a glimpse into the region’s geological history.

Leg 3 - Margaret River Region to PembertonAs you journey inland, the landscape shifts from vineyards to lush countryside. During spring (September to November), the charming town of Nannup comes alive with a spectacular wildflower display, blanketing the fields and forests in colour. Continue on to Pemberton, a tranquil destination known for its tall timber forests of karri and jarrah trees. Here, adventure seekers can climb the historic Dave Evans Bicentennial Tree or take a drive through Warren National Park, where forest rivers and picnic spots invite quiet moments among nature.

Leg 4 - Pemberton to DenmarkTravel deeper into the Great Southern to reach Walpole-Nornalup National Park, home of the breathtaking Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk. This suspended walkway lets you wander high among the crowns of 400-year-old tingle trees, offering stunning forest views. From here, continue to the laid-back coastal town of Denmark, known for its thriving arts community and beautiful natural attractions. Don’t miss Greens Pool and Elephant Rocks, where turquoise waters and granite formations create postcard-perfect views.

Leg 5 - Denmark to AlbanyHead east along the coast to Albany, a destination rich in both whale-watching opportunities and history. The journey inself is a feast for the senses, winding past dramatic granite outcrops and pristine turquiose bays. Once Western Australia’s first European settlement, Albany’s history is preserved at the National Anzac Centre and the Historic Whaling Station.

Leg 5 - Albany to Stirling RangesA weekend visit to Albany / Kinjarling gives you the option of breakfasting at the iconic Farmers' Markets for a taste of the region’s fresh local flavours. But you’ll need to rise early to make the most of the day’s activities. Forty minutes north, rising above the karri tree forest, you’ll find the striking granite range of Porongurup National Park. Take the two-hour return walk to Castle Rock and Granite Skywalk to take in the rich birdlife, wildflowers (August to December) and panoramic views. Continue your journey along Chester Pass Road to Stirling Range National Park and walk the Bluff Knoll / Bular Mial trail ascending Western Australia’s second highest peak.

Leg 6 - Albany to HopetounHopetoun is the gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Fitzgerald River National Park, home to over 1,800 flowering plant species — many found nowhere else. Visit Hopetoun between July and October to see southern right whales and their calves at Point Ann.

Leg 7 - Hopetoun to EsperanceContinue east to Esperance / Kepa Kurl and follow the Great Ocean Drive to explore pristine white-sand beaches like Blue Haven and Twilight Cove. Discover the Recherche Archipelago on a wildlife cruise, then visit Cape Le Grand National Park to relax on Lucky Bay, one of the world’s best beaches, where kangaroos roam the shore. For more adventure, extend to Cape Arid National Park.

Leg 8 - Esperance to HydenLeaving the coast behind, journey north through the Wheatbelt towns of Ravensthorpe, Lake King, and Hyden. Your destination is the spectacular Wave Rock / Katter Kich — a 15-metre-high granite formation shaped by nature over two billion years, resembling a giant cresting wave frozen in stone. Explore Wave Rock Reserve, where in spring, the surrounding landscape bursts into colour with vibrant wildflowers. Don’t miss Mulka’s Cave, home to more than 450 ancient Aboriginal rock paintings that share the legend of Mulka and the region’s deep cultural heritage.

In wildflower season, the roadside bursts into vibrant colour, making the drive especially memorable.
