Layers of identity
For the Celts, identity has been shaped over centuries and involves a mix of genetic background, linguistic traditions, social structures, and political history. The Viking identity similarly has multiple layers. It includes their roots as Norse seafarers with a strong warrior culture, their pagan religion and mythology, their expansion and settlement across Europe, and the integration with local cultures. Viking identity was also expressed through material culture, social hierarchy, and their legacy in the regions they influenced.
