"svaviṣayāsaṃprayoge cittasvarūpānukāra ivendriyāṇāṃ pratyāhāraḥ " (II, Sutra 54)
Pratyahara
Withdrawl of the senses.
Limiting of sensory input in order to establish self-mastery. Sensory data is like buzzing bees, distracting our attention and focus. Through the practice of withdrawing from these inputs the mind/body/spirit prepare for the concentration and focus required for long-term meditation and ultimate freedom.
" When separated from their corresponding objects, the organs follow, as it were, the nature of the mind that is called pratyāhāra (restraining of the organs).." (II, Sutra 49-53)
Mastering the senses is the first step to establishing focus (dharana).
Meditate.
Sleep, rest, limit external sensory input.
Outward
Disconnect from energy vampires (e.g. people, media, conflicts, etc.)
Take a vacation.
Go on a silent retreat.
Practice alternate nostril breathing and shanmukhi mudra.
Practice focused asana.
Wear noise-cancelling headphones and/or a blindfold.
Practice pranayama.
Get a massage.
Create a soothing/sensory nurturing environment (e.g. clean, sense pleasing)
Stay Present
Do acts of self-less service.
Notice when you want to escape (and what from), as an indicator of sensory overload.
Be intentional about what you consume (e.g. food, content, ideas, etc.).
Notice how the people around you make you feel.
Resist the urge to escape through overstimulation.
Discipline your senses (i.e. decide what inputs get attention, how, and when.).
Discipline your attention (i.e. decide what you want to tune into and stick to your decision)
