Explicit Vocabulary Routine

When?

The explicit vocabulary routine provides the steps on how to execute instruction around Tier 2 vocabulary words.

Why?

How?

Where?

When do I use the explicit vocabulary routine?

When you are teaching the “Before Reading” portion of Read Aloud and Shared Reading lessons, there often are words called out to teach. You will introduce these words to students near the beginning of your lesson, before you start the day's reading.

How do I prepare to teach the Explicit Vocabulary Routine?

Use the Explicit Vocabulary Routine to plan your vocabulary words ahead of time in conjunction with the lesson plan. In your lesson plans, you are provided the vocabulary word(s) and a student-friendly definition. Choose 1-2 of the preidentified vocabulary words, and for each word, determine:

  • An example (or use the pictures when provided)
  • The parameters for use (a part of speech or ways students could use the word)
  • How students can apply or practice the word(s)

You can find this resource by going to NHA’s curriculum website > State > Grade > ELA > Lesson Prep Resources > Explicit Vocabulary Routine

Why is it important to follow the Explicit Vocabulary Routine?

Research shows that students' breadth and depth of vocabulary strongly correlates to their reading comprehension. Specifically, students' breadth of vocabulary knowledge, when compared to depth, has a stronger relationship with reading comprehension (Moats & Tolman 17). The Explicit Vocabulary Routine ensures that we are supporting students’ breadth of vocabulary knowledge and comprehension of the text.
