Cooperation with other Organizations

The UN works with intergovernmental and international non-governmental organizations to strengthen electoral processes worldwide through cooperation on shared principles, knowledge sharing, and joint capacity-development initiatives, including trainings for Member States.

Electoral assistance is a system-wide effort, drawing on expertise of many UN entities whose mandates and activities touch elections.

Declaration of Global Principles for Citizen Election Observation

Adopted at the UN in 2012, these principles provide a framework for non-partisan citizen election observation. As of 2025, it is endorsed by more than 300 organizations and networks worldwide.

Launched in 1999 by the UN (EAD and UNDP) and its partners, BRIDGE is widely recognized as the most comprehensive professional development programme for election administrators. It has delivered training in more than 100 countries, strengthening skills of electoral officials and stakeholders worldwide.

Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation

Launched at UN Headquarters in 2005, this declaration and its Code of Conduct aim to harmonize the methods and standards for election observation. Currently endorsed by 54 organizations, it serves to enhance professionalism and consistency across observation efforts. Its 20th anniversary was marked in 2025.
