Confined Space
Definitions & Classes
Confined Space means an enclosed or partially enclosed space that:
- is not designed or intended for human occupancy except for the purpose of performing work;
- has restricted means of access and egress; and
- may become hazardous to an employee entering it due to its design, construction, location or atmosphere, the materials or substances in it, or any other conditions relating to it.
Is there a difference between a “Restricted Space (Class 2)" and a “Confined Space (Class 1)"?
Class 1 Confined Space
Class 2 Restricted Space
- Is the space fully or partially enclosed?
- Is the space not both designed and constructed for continuous human occupancy?
- Might an atmospheric hazard occur?
- A confined space must meet all 3 of the criteria to be classified as Class 1
- space from which the egress of a worker is restricted, limited, or impeded
- Is designed for human occupancy
- may also be where atmospheric conditions are continuously controlled
General Information
Confined Spaces restrictions are to protect a worker who performs work within a fully or partially enclosed space that is not both designed and constructed for continuous human occupancy and in which atmospheric hazards may occur.
A confined space entry is considered to have occurred as soon as any part of the entrant’s body breaks the plane of the opening this may include atmospheric testing. Under such a condition, the Confined Spaces Regulation would apply.
All sites are required to have, and keep up to date, a confined space inventory for each area of the site. This inventory is available on the SHE Library.
