La mente se identifica con el comportamiento externo; cualquier referencia acerca de la mente no sería más que una referencia a algún tipo de conducta externa. Afirmar que se tiene un estado mental no es describir una entidad interna, sino disponerse a actuar de cierta manera.
Ejemplo: "creer que hay agua" se describe como disponerse a buscar un vaso.
La sensación de dolor, por ejemplo, es en sí misma algo diferente al comportamiento asociado con el dolor.
La coherencia con el materialismo exigía que cualquier respuesta al problema se formulara en términos de fenómenos físicos, lo cual impulsó el surgimiento de dos corrientes teóricas con estrategias divergentes: el materialismo eliminativo y el funcionalismo.

El conductismo constituye el inicio de la saga contemporánea del materialismo. Desde comienzos del siglo XX hasta mediados de la década del ’50.
La mente no es algo separado del cuerpo, sino una manifestación de procesos físicos.
Las conductas descritas en los enunciados hipotéticos deben entenderse como actos intencionales, y no como simples respuestas fisiológicas o mecánicas del cuerpo.
Hacia la mitad de la década del ’50 el conductismo comenzó a ser reemplazadopor la teoría de la identidad o también llamada, fisicalismo.
