The Respiratory System
14.7 million teens in middle or high school reported vaping.
There are many ways that vaping can harm your respiratory system. Vapes are made with vitamin E, which is safe for humans to ingest, although it is too thick to enter the lungs. Therefore, leaving a thick coating of chemicals around them.
Some chemicals found in vapes:
- Diacetyl, which is a food additive used to deepen flavors.
- Formaldehyde is a toxic chemical that is often used in resin products for finishing wood.
- Acrolein, which is a common weed killer.

The Nervous System
Among students who reported vaping, 26.3% report daily use.
Nicotine is a highly addictive chemical, this means it can dysregulate activity in several parts of the brain to be more desirable. The two brain functions associated most with nicotine the most are the reward process and executive function. Reward process - The brain's motivation system, which guides you to a positive outcome. Executive function - a set of cognitive processes that is essential for controlling thoughts, actions, and emotions. The human brain continues to develop until a person is in their mid-20s, and using nicotine while the brain is developing can seriously affect the brain's neuronal circuits that control attention, impulse control, mood, and reward sensitivity.
The Circulatory System
In 2021, 75% of middle and high school students reported exposure to advertising of nicotine products.
One of the most dangerous things that vaping can affect is your heart. We can see side effects like higher blood pressure, increased heart rate, released adrenaline, and hyperinflammatory response that can lead to blood clots and respiratory distress syndrome.
The Digestive System
In the U.S., vaping has caused more than 2,000 lung illnesses and over 40 deaths.
Nicotine also has an effect on our digestive systems. The chemicals in vape juice can disrupt gut motility, which is the movement of food through the digestive system, causing symptoms like constipation, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Vapes also irritate the stomach and intestinal linings, which can show up as nausea, heartburn, and indigestion.
Mental Health
In middle and high school students, suiside is the 3rd leading cause of death.
Vaping has many effects on the body, but one of the most important things to take into account is the mental health effects that is associated with vaping in adolescents. Researchers have found that nicotine dependence has been linked with impulsivity, mood disorders, anxiety, suicidality, and depression. This is because nicotine interrupts the cerebral dopamine pathway, altering the way our body reacts to stress and changing our brain's coping mechanisms.

Some diseases that stem from vaping:
- Bronchiolitis Obliterans (BO or Popcorn Lung), stems from the diacetyl that causes damage to small passageways in the lungs.
- Lipoid Pneumonia, which happens when fatty acids enter the lungs. It is a result of oily liquid entering the lungs, sparking an inflammatory response in the lungs.
- Primary Spontaneous Pneumothorax (collapsed lung) this happens when there is a hole in the lung and oxygen escapes.
