UNIT 3

Alternative to Portrait Project

"Portriats & Still Life Art"

During Unit 3 we will learn about Post-Impressionism, play with oil pastels, different types of drawing pencils & even white crayon! Students will be creating a portrait & Starry Night Mash-up piece along with a drawn still-life.

For Some students, religious beliefs prohibit them from drawing life forms (people, animals...) If you or your student would like to opt out of our portrait lesson, I have alternative projects they can submit in place of drawing the portrait. Please click on the image below to view options:

ARTIST HIGHTLIGHTS

Paul Cezanne

Vincent Van Gogh

Paul Cezanne was a French painter known as the "Father of Modern Painting." He focused on geometric shapes likes spheres and cones. Cezanne painted still fies, landscapes, and portraits. Many of his still lifes contain round fruits. He liked to line up his still lifes geometrically. His father wanted him to be a Lawyer, but Cezanne loved painting too much and decided to become and artist instead. If you look closely at his artwork you can see geometric shapes, short & choppy brush strokes with layers of colors.

Vincent VanGogh was born in the Netherlands, but travelled all across Europe. His art style was called "Impressionism" for its very blurry appearance. VanGogh did not start painting until he was in his late twenties and painted LOTS of self-portraits. He is most well-know for his work "The Starry Night", "The Postman", and "Sunflowers." VanGogh used quick, quick little lines in his artwork to show movement and capute the essence of a moment.
