  • Mechanic

Margo is researching carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work and learns that these jobs are part of the building trades. While exploring, she found another category called mechanical trades and began looking into it for more career options. Margo discovers a surprising statistic: only 3.4% of workers in building trades are women, though this still represents about a quarter-million women. She wonders if entering mechanical trades as a woman would be challenging or a good job opportunity. She finds a quote from Trades NL in Canada during her research.

“Trades NL wholeheartedly believes that the Building Trades and Construction Industry should reflect the diversity of the people in our province. Considering there are currently no provisions in place to ensure women are hired on provincial projects, it’s vital to continue illustrating the immense value of promoting employment opportunities for women in building trades.” Tom Woodford Trades NL

Do you think it will be easy or difficult for Margo to find a job in building trades?

Women in Mechanical Trades

https://www.patricebanks.com/

Where there's a shortage, there's opportunity. The high demand for trades jobs increases everyone's chances of finding work. Since there are fewer female mechanics, women may have more job opportunities as shops look for equal representation.

The low number of female mechanics can be an issue for female customers, who often report poor service and price gouging. Seeing this gap, Patricia Banks, or Patrice, opened Girls Auto Clinic in 2015, an all-female mechanic shop in Philadelphia. It offers a comfortable place for women to get their cars repaired. She also added Clutch Beauty Bar, a salon where customers can get manicures, pedicures, and hair services while waiting for their cars.
