The Forest's Revelations

Analyzing Symbolism in The Scarlet Letter

Part I

Setting Analysis-
  • Create a discussion post analyzing how the forest setting in Chapters 16-18 functions as both a literal and symbolic space. Consider:
  • How does the forest differ from Puritan Boston?
  • Why do Hester and Dimmesdale meet here specifically?
  • What freedoms does this setting provide that aren't available in town?

Part II

Character Evolution (15 minutes)
In a virtual breakout room with 3-4 peers, examine how Hester and Dimmesdale's characters transform during their forest meeting. Each group member should focus on one aspect:
  • Dimmesdale's physical and emotional state
  • Hester's bold actions and decisions
  • Their changing relationship dynamic
  • The symbolism of removing the scarlet letter
Be prepared to nominate a speaker to answer one of the questions when we return to the main room. 😊

Part III

Thematic Analysis
Individual reflection: Create a brief multimedia presentation (2-3 slides) exploring ONE of these themes:
  • Freedom vs. Societal Constraints
  • Public vs. Private Identity
  • Nature vs. Civilization
  • Sin and Redemption
