Start

Interpret and compute quotients of fractions, and solve word problems involving division of fractions by fractions, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem.

Dividing Fractions

If you split the 1/4 piece into two equal parts, you’re cutting it in half. Now you have 2 of the 8 pieces the whole bar would be, so half of 1/4 is 1/8. When you divide something small into two equal parts, each piece becomes even smaller.

What happens when we cut a fraction in half?

Have you ever followed a recipe and needed to figure out how many ¼ cups fit into 1 cup? Let’s see what really happens when we divide fractions!

Use this side of the card to provide more information about a topic. Focus on one concept. Make learning and communication more efficient.

Imagine a chocolate bar that’s already cut into 4 equal pieces. You have 1 of those 4 pieces — that’s 1/4 of the whole bar.

Quick Check

Step-by-Step

Objective: Studnets will learn the steps of dividing fractions. Watch these three videos to learn how to Keep, Change, Flip.

Numbers You will learn how to divide one fraction by another in an easy, step-by-step way. You’ll learn how to flip the second fraction and multiply, and how to simplify your answer. Watching this video will help you understand dividing fractions better and make solving problems less confusing.

Rap Song This video is a rap song that teaches how to divide fractions using the method “Keep, Change, Flip.” It breaks down each step in a fun, musical way, with examples and visuals that show you how to turn a division problem into a multiplication problem.

Pictures & Models In this video, you’ll see how to divide fractions using pictures, diagrams, and models (like area models, bars, or shapes). Instead of just numbers, you’ll see what’s happening when one fraction is divided by another.

Guided Practice

Quick Reminder: To divide fractions, flip the second fraction (the one you’re dividing by) and multiply. Example: Steps to Follow:

  1. Keep the first fraction the same.
  2. Flip the second fraction (take the reciprocal).
  3. Multiply the numerators and multiply the denominators.
  4. Simplify the answer if needed.

Practice Solving Simplify if Possible

Dont Panic, you know what to do!

Why This Problem Is Relevant In this example, dividing fractions shows how to figure out how many equal portions can be made from a certain amount — a skill used in cooking, measuring, and sharing resources. Being able to solve this problem helps you think logically, manage quantities, and make accurate decisions in everyday life.
