What is a tense?

  • A tense of a verb tells us the time taht the verb is occurring (past present or future).
  • A verb in a simple present tense is a verb that is happening right now.
  • A verb has to be agreed with the noun.
  • If the noun is singular, he, she or it; the verb must be singular.
  • If the subject is plural, they, we, I or you; the verb must be plural.

Rules to write a present tense verb

  1. Add a "-s" to form most singular verbs in a sentence.
    1. read -> reads
    2. weigh -> weighs
    3. travel ->travels
    4. find -> finds

2. Add a "-es" when the veb finishes in -s,-ch, -sh, -x or z
    1. watch-> watches
    2. possess -> possesses
    3. rush -> rushes
    4. mix -> mixes
    5. buzz -> buzzes

3. If the verb finishes in a -y, change the to y to -> i, and add "-es"
    1. cry -> cries
    2. vary -> varies
    3. hurry -> hurries
    4. scurry -> scurries

4. DO NOT ADD anything if the subject is plural
    1. Chimps eat mostly fruit.
    2. I often watch the chimps.
    3. The girls like the animals.
