Understanding Pathogens and Diseases

Every disease has a cause — and that cause is often a pathogen, which means a germ that can make your body sick. There are four main types of pathogens: viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites. Each one behaves differently, spreads differently, and affects our bodies in unique ways.By learning which diseases come from which types of pathogens, we can understand how they spread and — most importantly — how to prevent them.

There are 4 type of pathogens:

Parasites
Virus
Bacteria
Fungi
Viruses

Tiny particles that invade your body’s cells and take them over to make more copies of themselves. They can’t live or reproduce on their own — they need a host (like you!). Examples: Flu, COVID-19, common cold. How to protect yourself: Vaccines, good hygiene, and rest when ill.

Bacteria

Single-celled living organisms that can live almost anywhere — in soil, water, or inside your body. Some are helpful (like those in your gut), but others cause disease. Examples: Tetanus, Cholera, Food Poisoning. How to protect yourself: Wash hands, cook food properly, and use antibiotics only when prescribed.

Fungi

Organisms that grow in warm, damp places — on skin, in soil, or even in the air. They can cause infections, especially on the skin or nails. Examples: Athlete’s Foot, Ringworm. How to protect yourself: Keep skin clean and dry, don’t share towels or shoes.

Parasites

Organisms that live on or inside another organism (their host) and feed off them. They can spread through insect bites or contaminated food/water. Example: Malaria (caused by a parasite carried by mosquitoes). How to protect yourself: Use mosquito repellent, sleep under nets, and keep surroundings clean.
