Theories of learning
Question 1 of 4
Question 1: Feedback
True: Behaviourism is based on the principle of stimulus and response, and does promote a teacher-led approach to teaching
- The teacher is in control of what needs to be done and how, they are looking for a specific response.
- People learn by following rules and regulations. Repetition is important – as is understanding the reward if you get it right, and the punishment if you get it wrong.
- It is very autocratic and fails to take into account the independent and enquiring nature of people.
- Theorists here include – Thorndike, Watson, Pavlov (Pavlov’s dogs learning to ring a bell to get food), Skinner (rats), Tolman and Gagne.

Question 2 of 4
Question 2: Feedback
The need for information to be actively processed for learning to occur is central to Cognitivism.
- People learn by piecing together various bits of information until they create a complete picture (some of the pieces they may already have – prior learning/experience).
- Cognitivism describes learning as an active process.
- Cognitivism can be criticised for being too focussed on personal development rather than meeting learning outcomes; not all people have the capacity or desire to process vast amounts of information.
- Theorists include – Dewey, Kohler, Vygotsky, Piaget, Bandura, Bruner.

Question 3: Feedback
True: Constructivism is a branch of cognitivism. Although some argue that it is a theory in its own right.
- Constructivist learning theory outlines that individuals are active participants in the learning process.
- They use new knowledge and experiences to build on prior knowledge and experiences to create new meaning - their own understanding of reality.
- Vygotsky, Brunner, Piaget and Dewey have all contributed to this theory – making it difficult to separate from Cognitivism.
