Environmental Awareness Training

Educating individuals on protecting our natural environment

Introduction to Environmental Awareness

Defining Environmental Awareness Environmental awareness involves understanding the impact of human activities on the planet. It is essential for informed decision-making in today's world. Key Environmental Challenges Climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss are major global and local challenges threatening ecosystems and human wellbeing. Corporate Responsibility Organisations play a vital role in addressing environmental issues by adopting sustainable practices and reducing their ecological footprint. As a business we have developed Acorn Impact with our 5 pillars - Environmental Sustainability is where this links to our awareness. Promoting Sustainable Practices Employee actions and decisions can positively influence environmental outcomes, supporting sustainability throughout the organisation. Our Acorn Impact Pillar Ethical Sourcing helps promote these practices.

Environmental Standards, Legislation and Compliance

ISO14001 International standard for Environmental Management Systems (EMS), provides a structured framework for businesses to manage their environmental responsibilities in a systematic way. It allows us to control our environmental impact activities, improve environmental performance and ensure compliance with laws and regulations as well as promoting a continual improvement plan. Overview of Environmental Laws Key UK and EU laws like the Environmental Protection Act 1990 guide environmental protection and waste management.  Whilst we might be out of the EU these laws may still apply or will be converted to UK law.  Industry-Specific Regulations Different sectors must follow tailored environmental regulations to ensure sector-appropriate compliance.  Our team based at Tata will have to follow different regulations to those of us who are office based.  Importance of Compliance Compliance protects the environment, upholds corporate integrity, and prevents legal consequences. Consequences of Non-Compliance Real-world case studies demonstrate the risks and impacts of failing to meet environmental laws.

Environmental Impact of Business Operations

Energy, Waste, and Water Usage Business operations consume energy and water while generating waste, impacting environmental sustainability. Supply Chain Environmental Impact Supply chain and procurement decisions significantly influence the environmental footprint of a business. Carbon Footprint Assessment Understanding and reducing carbon footprint helps businesses minimise their negative environmental effects. Sustainable Business Practices Implementing sustainable practices promotes strategic planning and reduces environmental harm.

Sustainable Practices in the Workplace

Energy and Water Conservation Implementing strategies to reduce energy and water use helps lower the workplace's environmental footprint effectively. Waste Management Principles Applying reduce, reuse, and recycle principles promotes responsible waste management in the workplace. Offices in both Wales and England now have to include waste segregation as part of their day to day activities. Green Procurement and Travel Adopting sustainable procurement and travel policies supports environmental responsibility in organizational decisions. For example always ask yourself do I need to travel, can I car share, can the meeting be via teams. Digital Sustainability Minimising data storage and energy use in IT operations contributes to overall workplace sustainability.

Personal Responsibility and Engagement

Adopting Eco-friendly Habits Employees can reduce paper use, recycle, and conserve energy to support environmental goals effectively. Fostering Sustainability Culture Creating a culture of sustainability in teams encourages shared responsibility and proactive environmental actions. Employee Engagement and Reporting Encouraging employees to report environmental concerns helps improve organisational sustainability efforts. At Acorn report to your Manager or at Head Office report to one of the Environmental Officers and raise an Incident Report. Please refer to the Environmental page on the Hub. Empowering Personal Ownership Empowering individuals to take ownership of their environmental impact inspires positive change within the organisation.
