Taking Action Against Ageism

Giving you the knowledge and skills you need to recognise and challenge ageism

Start

Introduction

"Ageism is prejudice against our future selves."

Ageism underpins many of the issues currently faced by older people and results in negative stereotypes, unfair treatment and people’s rights not being respected and upheld. Ageism can also negatively influence the decisions made by society, meaning that the services, facilities and opportunities we all need to help us age well can be inadequate and discriminate against us as we grow older.

STEREOTYPES are oversimplified ideas and beliefs about people based on group membership. When we use them, they can make us treat others unfairly and stop us from getting to know who they really are. Stereotypes affect how we THINK.

DISCRIMINATION is when people are treated unfairly or differently because of who they are, often based on stereotypes or prejudice, and it can hurt opportunities, relationships, and how people feel about themselves. Discrimination affects the ways we ACT.

PREJUDICE is making assumptions or forming negative attitudes about someone before knowing them, often based on factors like appearance, background, or identity. Prejudice affects the way we FEEL.

Here you can put a title highlighted, something that captivates your audience

With Genially templates, you can include visual resources to leave your audience open-mouthed. You can also highlight a specific phrase or piece of information that will be etched into the memory of your audience, and even embed external content that surprises: videos, photos, audios... Whatever you want!Need more reasons to create dynamic content? Well: 90% of the information we assimilate comes to us through sight and, in addition, we retain 42% more information when the content is in motion. What you read: interactivity and animation can turn the most boring content into something fun. At Genially, we use AI (Awesome Interactivity) in all our designs, so that you level up with interactivity and turn your content into something that adds value and captivates.

'A presentation is NOT WOW when it's boring and you see drowsiness taking over your audience because no one has understood anything.'

When carrying out a presentation, two objectives must be pursued: conveying information and avoiding yawns. To achieve this, it may be a good practice to create an outline and use words that will be etched into the minds of your audience.

Dehumanising

Potentially harmful

Did you know? The words and images we choose can spread biased or harmful ideas without us noticing, which reinforces unfair views and limits how people are seen.

Did you know? Stereotypes can harm people by lowering self-esteem, limiting opportunities, and damaging relationships, while also reinforcing unfair systems that hold entire groups back.

Did you know? When we generalise about people using stereotypes, we often miss their real strengths, silence individuality, and can unintentionally create barriers that limit opportunities for everyone.

Did you know? When stereotypes strip away people’s individuality, they can become dehumanising, making us see a label instead of a person, which harms respect, empathy, and real connection.
