Chiang Rai: The White Temple

Chiang Rai, home to the famous White Temple, or Wat Rong Khun. This extraordinary temple is one of the most unusual religious structures in the world. Entirely white and decorated with thousands of tiny mirrors, it reflects the sunlight. Designed by the Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, the temple combines traditional Buddhist architecture with modern, imaginative elements. Every section of the building carries symbolic meaning related to purity, enlightenment, the cycle of life, and the path to overcoming human desires. Wat Rong Khun is not only a temple, but also an ongoing art project, making it a unique cultural landmark in Thailand.

Culture and Traditions

Thailand’s culture is deeply rooted in Buddhist principles such as kindness, respect, and calmness.

  • Traditional Greeting – The “Wai”: People greet each other by placing their hands together and giving a slight bow.
The wai shows respect and is used in many situations, from saying hello to thanking someone.
  • Temple Etiquette: When visiting temples, shoulders and knees should be covered, and shoes must be removed before entering.
These gestures show respect for sacred spaces and religious practices.
  • Cultural Taboos:
Never touch someone’s head — it is considered the most sacred part of the body.Avoid pointing your feet at people or Buddha statues, as feet are viewed as the lowest and least clean part of the body.
