Historical-Exigetical Brief

Paul is speaking here to the Jewish people in the Temple at Jerusalem.

The Jewish people believed that Paul had brought Gentiles into the courts (a forbidden act), that he teaches against the Law and the temple, and were now in an uproar. The Romans stepped in to stop the uproar. Paul is now addressing the Jews.

Paul's main point is to break the belief that Paul is against God and the Law, establish his authority in his academic and Jewish background, and that his grounds for preaching the Gospel to Gentiles is God-ordained.

The theme of the Great Comission is brought here: preach the Gospel to all the nations. The theme of persecution for the Gospel is also brought here.

Gospel Message Breakdown

Jesus is presented to be God, the One whom Saul was persecuting.

The response being called for is the acceptance of Jesus as Lord, and the preaching of the Gospel to the Gentiles.

The motivation is the radical conversion of Paul, who was a Jew of Jews, a Pharisee of Pharisees, and a persecutor of the Way.
